Windows 8 Pro build 9200 x64
Current Release:BETA
Next Release:TBA

Having some free time and the passion to create a custom Windows build, I have started Windows codename "Luna". Luna has nothing to do with Windows XP or the Luna clown theme. Luna is based off Windows 7 build 7600 x86, x64 support might be made available at a later time. I'm hoping to finish this Alpha within the next few days, convert to wim and package for select testers.
Luna will combine the technology/features from Windows Longhorn/vista, Windows 7 rtm, and Windows 8; feature custom sounds, 3 "Luna" themes, custom bootscreen, custom login, winver, and wallpapers. Possibly custom iso setup.

New stuff will be posted just below the "EDIT" section
EDIT
UPDATE 7-27-2011 1:40AM: Work on Beta 2 will begin today. It will focus on stability issues and displayed items on the screen... for now.
UPDATE 7-26-2011 8:40PM: It appears that the first bug is caused by a longhorn dll mixup when changing themes :$. This will be fixed in "Beta 2". Thanks goes to tonychau77 for the find.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 11:12PM: Beta is ready for early release.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 4:40PM: Now compressing final beta iso should be 3 parts this time, each ~900mb, except the last one. Select internal testers will get it as it uploads, everyone else tomorrow.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 4:00PM: Beta 1 testing on actual hardware is a success. You will need to install drivers for your machine. Vbox has also been removed.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 1:10PM: Internal Beta 1 testing has started. Beta 1 will not contain anti-virus as Alpha 2 previously did.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 11:30PM: Due to "Pirated software" issue brought up, Beta 1 will use Oobe and will require software key and Activation.
UPDATE 7-25-2011 12:44AM: Alpha 2 is being scrapped due to "Longhorn" issues. There won't be a "development reset" *hehe* , instead Beta 1 will be released by Tuesday :o. Beta 1 features will be announced by 5pm tomorrow.

Luna Beta is now here. Here's a peek at beta running on an actual computer, no vbox. "Look Ma, transparency".

Here's a little rundown on what has changed:
Beta 1
    - Using some "new" sounds
    - Explorer overhaul
    - Features 1st offline update for bootscreen
    - improved startup of sidebar and usertile
    - No oobe for faster startup, you can still change user accounts and other stuff
    - Must be activated now with Windows 7 key. Not provided
•There are other ways  but use at your own risk...
    - Longhorn feel in Explorer (there are some issues, will be fixed in update 2)
    - IE 9 integrated still
    - 2.61GB iso
    - Custom Winver, watermarks, logo

Beta 1 requires Activation, and for some reason I put a password on the archive... password is just above this sentence.

Bug Discovery List :idea::
Thanks to these members for pointing out bugs to be fixed:
1st bug in :beta: - tonychau77 - Login screen
2nd - tonychau77 - Explorer back/forward

ALPHA 1

Alpha 1 has reached "EOL", if you are running a copy of Luna Alpha 1, it is recommended that you download and install Beta 1.

Alpha 1 Features:
    - Added Vista sidebar
    - Added Windows 8 User tile
    - Added 2 themes & wallpaper "placeholder"
    - Disabled sounds(you can still use Windows 7 sounds though)
    - Integrated IE 9
    - Some Updates installed
    - No Key required(I hope this part works) Alpha 1 will be removed at 5pm for this reason.
    - Updateable(Since it uses Windows 7 core)
    - SP1 upgradable
    - No Oobe yet, logs in automatically(planning to fix this later via sysprep)

Mod Edit: Removed links. Don't build "Custom" OS's on RTM Software unless it's abandonware.

well Longhorn was mainly praised for WinFS, 3D and timeline file view, DCE/DWM, Sidebar and Avalon
of which last 3 are already there in 7

since there is no way on earth you can import first 2 things
saying "will combine the technology/features from Windows Longhorn is lost cause :P

You do realize that, by building this on top of Windows 7 RTM, you are distributing pirated software, right?

Anything but Windows XP
I've tried it and I think it has potential.

I just found a easy way to change the lock screen of Luna Beta to the Longhorn one. Just follow these steps.

1.Click on "Vienna" in Personalization.
Image

2.Click on "Luna Default".

3.Done

FEEDBACK
Another bug I found is there should be a gray next button next to the back button when there isn't any next pages in explorer.exe but there isn't.

Yes, I noticed this in vbox and on physical install. Its a problem with explorer.exe, imageres.dll and Explorerframe.dll. I will fix in Beta 2.

Topic locked. Don't base a "Custom" OS on an RTM build of something unless it's Linux or Abandonware.
Thanks.
