Windows 8 to have same system requirements as Windows 7

Quote:
Windows 8 will be able to run on a wide range of machines because it will have the same requirements or lower.

"We've also built intelligence into Windows 8 so that it can adapt to the user experience based on the hardware of the user. So, whether you're upgrading an existing PC, or buying a new one, Windows will adapt to make the most of that hardware."

The requirements for Windows 7 are the same as those for the much-maligned Windows Vista OS, although Microsoft hasn't confirmed that Vista machines will be able to run Windows 8.

Hopefully this is true, but if Windows 8 is going to use the same rules as Windows 7, I can see it running just fine even without adaptive optimisations :)

I heard the same at WPC 2011 when I was watching it live. They said that their target is that all versions of Windows have the same or less requirements than the previous version.

doesn't surprise me as it basically is the same underpinnings as Windows Vista. Which is also the same requirements.
Not bad Microsoft as usually new OS's have higher requirements, (look at Windows 3.1-XP) and OSX
But this means a Vista computer from 2006 will still work with a 6 year newer OS

Oh and what it means about the performance intelegence thing, is if it has an Aero capable graphics card it will display aero.
And if the screen resolution is at least 1024x768 then it will have the metro tile based UI.
Meaning netbooks will not get the tile UI.
1366x768 and over allows the pinning of apps side by side.

Well I been finding computers made in 2006 onward have been able to support 7 no problem, even though the experience index leaves a lot to be desired.

I'm glad they have done this! Atleast people won't have to spend a forturne doing there computer up or buying a new one just to run Windows 8.

Nah, you're going to hear that with every new version of Windows.

If its still going to be NT 6.x underneath then this should come as no surprise. Its nice that netbooks and now tablets are forcing Microsoft to keep the OS as lean as possible.

This is good news. But I will likely buy a new computer with Windows 8 even if I am able to run it on my current one. I've had my current since fall 2008 and I also want a better computer that I have now.

This will make it much more simpler for non-tecies to make the decision to upgrade.

This will keep the crowd who is concerned about compatibility issues very happy. Windows 8 is looking great, can't wait to try it out!

Really, if things go Microsoft's way, Windows 8's hardware requirements will be lower than Windows 7's. Efficiency and legacy hardware support is what Microsoft always should want to improve on, while keeping good support for newer and upcoming hardware.

To be honest, with Windows 8, I just want them to refine it as much as possible before they decide to release it, it'd be nice to have an OS that comes out with as few bugs as possible!
I mean, we don't want another Vista on our hands really. >.>

Though, maybe they'll throw a few proper beta's out to people whom care!

That's awesome that Microsoft didn't changed the minimum system requirements for Windows 8, and it is the same as Windows 7's one. My computer it's fairly old in terms of hardware, so I hope that I can still find some compatible drivers for them.

We bought a computer back in 2006, a Packard Bell iMedia something, can't remember the model number, but it came pre-installed with Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2 I think). Then I got Internet from an ADSL provider in my local area. All awesome, got a Speedtouch 330 USB ADSL modem from my ISP and using it for a long time. Windows Vista was released, and I upgraded to it because my PC had a sticker that says that it's Windows Vista Capable. So I did and also found drivers for my modem, I grabbed the ISO image of the Vista driver from the Thomson website all amazing worked like a charm. I also upgraded the memory to 2GB and also bought a new graphics card, a GeForce 9600GT because I only had the integrated one on the motherboard. I know that's messy. I've built a Frankenstein PC.

Then Windows 7 came out. Not much changed but it's a major improvement over Windows Vista so I had to upgrade again.
My modem is still usable, but it's 10x harder to set it up. I had enough of it and bought an ADSL Router. The chosen box was an ASUS WL-600g. So one problem fixed.

Updated sound drivers is still available for my machine. I have a Realtek AC'97 one, still integrated. It's fairly old, and now you can get these HD ones. But Windows 7 still supports it.

Graphics card drivers, uhm... I can get that one for nearly every Operating System out there, and sure it will be updated.

I also have a Logitech G15 Gaming keyboard, drivers no problem for now! I can get for XP to 7 and even Mac OS X.

As much I've seen of Windows 8 it's amazing! I love the idea of live and personalized tiles similar ones in Windows Phone 7, but demos shown at CES2011, D9 and WPC2011 every device has a 16:9 screen. My display is a 17" one and it's 4:3. I think the aspect ratio will be acceptable, it will be a little weird, but oh well. I also heard that after Windows 8, legacy support will be dropped and I will be forced to buy a new machine. We will see what Windows 8 will bring to us.

By the way first post here on the BetaArchive forum, sorry for my crappy English skills, hopefully you can understand it guys! Also apologize for any punctuation and grammar errors.

I see no reason why vista-machines should´t be able to run on windows8, compatability has been carried on right through the whole range on windows OSs since the days when XP was developedAnd this is more than teh years now.

P4R4OX´s Frankenstein PC is not such a monster at all. Monsters can´t take a lot; his PC has already allowed a lot of changes and improvements. And the end is still not in sight. Best wishes to him and his PC!

You know with the computer's in the past few years it would amaze me if anyone released an os that would tax a i7... kinda defeated the purpose of good programming...

Vista era systems run 7 fine so they will run 8 just as well. In fact many Vista era systems did better when upgraded to Windows 7. Even many XP era systems will run 7 well, but you'll want to upgrade the RAM. Seeing how well 7 ran on a cheap Atom netbook, I tried it on a 2004 P4 system and it ran just fine for daily use. Drivers for older hardware can be an issue on XP era systems, but on anything Vista or 7, Windows 8 will take the same drivers.
