I think harddrives are still good too!! it's not a good idea to put all your files over the web.. Personally I would fear someone could gain access or steal informations... and the price too around 500 € for 3g version... is not really cheap.. you can get a netbook with 3G for 350 or even a tablet...

I like Chrome, but it's just too stupid going Cloud now. If anything, Joli OS is better as it's a web OS but still allows for local applications and storage based on Ubuntu. We are not ready for cloud, and I doubt many of us would want to store all our data on the cloud to either get it lost (Amazon) or hacked (Sony). Windows 8 may be cloud based, but it's hopefully will be the good type. Local and Cloud, not this.

It's a total waste of time. I never liked the whole "everything on the web" concept anyway.
You can't have a computer without applications... Let alone without an operating system.... :o
A combination absolutely, I do. But just the cloud? Never in my life...

They all blow
I'd rather get a netbook instead, you can make ubuntu cold boot in under a minute these days.
Also who needs storage unless you really have warez on the system? I mean Nobody is going to exceed the 120gb drives that netbooks offer with just word documents and pictures.
Couple that netbook with a 9.9e 3G plan that gives you 1Mbit uncapped per month and you are set since most netbooks have built-in 3G modems these days.
You can also use programs like crashplan to back up to your home computer for example.

I don't really see any benefits from a 100% cloud computer.

Build and compiled my own developer build today, took about 3 hours (from scratch).
Boots pretty fast and has the Chrome Interface.

I hate this concept. What about all those applications that don't exist on the web?
Sure if all you do is the basics it might suit you but I do way more than that and not having those apps I need is not an option.

Not to mention who trusts google? I mean come on they are an Ad company! :)

Yeah, also, what if your internet connection goes pluie? No computer! No good! I'll stay away from this as a main computer, but would be more then willing to try as a supplementary PC for testing and when "on the go". Other than that, I'm fine with my sdd and 8gb of ram for now.

Eh, CR48 owner checking in.

And honestly? I hate it. The software wasn't actually "finished finished" to speak, and it was just dumb. I was annoyed going from Chrome on Windows' keyboard shortcuts to the dedicated keys taking over F1-F10 (so I'd keep hitting the PC-native command). Lack of native media playback and storage that they're finally putting in was annoying. That stupid 'scanning media' popup every time you left your SD card in. No actual file management. I mean sure, it's being polished up but being a beta user... I was the first user to flash the 'leaked' BIOS to the laptop to turn it into a netbook... and get Windows running. (Some other idiot's going around going 'I did it first and installed OS X' but I was right there to flash it first with some help from Hexxeh.)

Hardware-wise? The trackpad was godawfully painful to use. I need a trackpad with actual buttons, not this 'pad as a button' BS. That's Synaptics' fault. The Gobi 3G modem was a pain in the ass to work with in terms of firmware and interfaces, but that's Qualcomm's fault.

I'd rather tote along my iPad than my CR48 (which I do anyways - faster sleep+resume, always connected compared to waiting a minute for the Gobi to re-load its' firmware EACH TIME IT CAME OUT OF SLEEP MODE and re-connect to Verizon, and quicker access to the things I need to do on a daily basis rather than muck around in a Web browser to try and do things like Remote Desktop - oh wait, still no HTML5 Citrix client.)

How'd you compile it? I know there are guides but I just keep failing at it, also the only pre-compiled builds online are either very buggy or from last year.

I believe they do have a very small hardrive, just enough to store the OS, but maybe more, have any specs been released for any of the Chromebooks?

look like dual core atoms.

http://www.google.com/chromebook/#chromebooks

This site has preconfigured images to try in virtualbox and vmware or via USB if you want to try and cant be bothered to compile it yourself.

http://chromeos.hexxeh.net/

especially look at the vanilla nightly builds.

In my opinion having all your files stored on the internet is quite risky. Chrome may offer many things but i don't believe file safety is one of them yet. So until that changes i'm sticking to HDDs too.

I totally agree with Nikos. The Chromebook is a great concept, but it needs a lot more improvement. I would never get one because I really need the HDD, so I have my data here, safely, at home... Anyway, maybe that may sound stupid, but it's true... You never know what happens there, and if you don't have network connection for a few days, you're stuck without a computer... That's just my opinion...
