Researchers at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton, Canada have cured cancer last week, yet there is a little ripple in the news or in TV. It is a simple technique using very basic drug. The method employs dichloroacetate, which is currently used to treat metabolic disorders. So, there is no concern of side effects or about their long term effects.

When they say they have cured it, I always think of the movie 'I am legend'. Showing how it could mutate easily, would need years of proper testing before we can say we have cured cancer.

You hear about these false "cures" all the time. Each time, when put under real scientific scrutiny, it just turns out to be too good to be true. Sorry, but yawn and pass.

Here is the official press release: http://www.dca.med.ualberta.ca/Home/Med ... rticle.pdf Basically it worked in rats and nobody's picked up human trials because there's no patent therefore big pharma isn't interested in it.

exactly. Many times they reported to discover the cure for cancer and yet no progress is shown...

Doctors do not treat cancer as a single illness but rather as many different depending on the body part it hits and its severity. So I guess as the science evolves more kinds of cancer will come to be curable rather than to expect to find the one "miraculous" medicine that will eliminate them all at once.

Here are some top rated comments on the hundreds of social news postings on the web from the lasts few years:

Simple answer: no Slightly more complicated answer: not yet, but maybe in the future? DCA is one of many compounds that has shown promise in the lab. There is no evidence that it works in people. A group at the University of Alberta seems do be the most interested in the compound. A quick look at clincaltrials.gov shows quite a few registered trials, some completed, but I couldn't find any published data regarding the results of the trials. It looks like the group is now more focused on publishing data that suggests that DCA might be an effective modulator of pulmonary hypertension in mice.

Oh jeezus, not this again. In vitro rarely translates into in vivo, which in turn rarely translates into clinical. Still even if it were promising, the lack of patent does not exclude potential for profit (through patented modifications). I just worked on an FDA filing for such a molecule and I know this to be the case. Stop the loony conspiracy theories already; no one is trying to deprive you of life-saving medication (except maybe insurance companies...)

Total [censored]. Any pharmaceutical company would ditch an entire year's profits to be able to say "We cured cancer." COMPETITOR: "We can minimize your herpes outbreaks!" PHARMA: "Oh. How nice. Remember cancer? Me neither."
Cancer gets "cured" every week on the internet, and it's [censored]. Just look at reddit sometime, they make fun of people who posts stories like this every week. The story "nobody has seen" has probably been posted hundreds of times on the internet but people were rational when they read it and understood how drug testing and development works.
