All i have to say is wow, i never have understood the putting out fires method to network security instead of securing it and always running different penetration testing instead of something like this happening!!! anywho heres the story:

After a recent hacker attack, which took down the Sony PlayStation Network for an extended period of time, Sony has admitted that hackers have broken into its servers on April 16th and 17th, 2011 and may have stolen personal user data. This time, hackers targeted the accounts of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) users; according to Sony, they may have stolen personal data from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts, as well as some of the data from an outdated database from 2007. This database includes approximately "12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain."

Sony really needs to upgrade its infrastructure as soon as possible.

I am really tired of this. I don't play online that often, but I use my PS3 for media a lot and I can't watch netflix with out being able to login to the PSN!

As if two cyber attacks in as many weeks wasn’t enough, it appears Sony could be in for a third, according to chatter in a IRC channel.

According to an CNET tipster, talk in the IRC channel suggested Sony’s website will be the target and that whatever data is retrieved will be made available publicly.

An observer of the Internet Relay Chat channel used by the hac*ers told CNET today that a third major attack is planned this weekend against Sony’s Web site.

With fears already high that PSN users’ personal details, along with credit cards, are being sold by hackers, this could be another huge publicity problem for Sony. PSN, the original target, is still not back online as yet.

I have a PS3 and it's been driving me nuts. Now I'm suffering from PS3 withdrawal... well not really... I don't care too much but I would still prefer to have the PSN back online ASAP.

Funny thing is that Sony thinks having PSN offline from customers is going to improve their ability to prevent an intrusion lol... Highly doubtful, if someone really wanted to get in they would...

Any news on this? It would probably be difficult to lock down the network completely, even with the couple of weeks lead time. On the other hand, if Sony is expecting an intrusion, the hackers may be at risk of tipping their hand with a new attack, and the consequences are going to be very very serious (multi-millions lost due to the shutdown, for a start)

I thought Sony just put their service back up?

First off, they need help from a pro company. Maybe they should outsource to get software designers. Another attack after they just 'rebuilt' their systems? Ridiculous. No one will want to use their services.
Second, they should test their system with fake attacks. They should know their own system inside and out, so it cant be that difficult.

This is SAD Sony. Just SAD!!!

Well anyway, I heard that Sony is now offering a reward for whoever gives information leading to the hacker that took down the PSN. I hope the PSN service is online soon and that the hacker faces justice.

Well forget about that. I would rather like PSN to stay hacked, it's all their fault and they just suck. (Yeah, kinda hater speech).

In a recent statement issued by Sony, they claimed that they will be aiming to restore full functionality of the PS network (PSN) by the end of May.
