An early copy of Windows 8 leaked to the Internet this week and enthusiasts have been digging their way through the various new bits in Microsoft’s next-generation operating system.

Windows 8 build 7850.0.winmain_win8m1.100922-1508 contains a number of references to a brand new feature in Windows: Portable Workspaces. Microsoft will allow Enterprise customers to create USB storage driven copies of Windows. “Portable Workspace is a Windows feature that allows you to run Windows from a USB storage device,” notes Microsoft in its description of the feature inside Windows 8. Users at mydigitallife unveiled the features inside 7850 and discovered that the feature requires at least 16GB of space.

The addition of such a feature in Windows will ease document compatibility and application feature differences for information workers. It appears as though Microsoft is targeting the feature at Enterprise customers who may have several varied uses for portable versions of Windows. IT professionals will welcome the feature as it will empower them to quickly boot a copy of Windows 8 to diagnose any existing problems on the local PC installation. Information workers will be able to power up a copy of Windows 8 on a client’s PC with their own documents and workspace to securely and easily share any presentations or company data.

It’s not yet clear exactly how Portable Workspaces work once created. The 16GB limitation could also indicate a minimum HDD space for Windows 8 across the board. One thing that is clear from the latest leaks is that Microsoft is working hard to add a number of exciting new features to Windows, making its next-generation operating system an exciting affair.

Yes, very interesting; maybe it's a Windows Live OS that replace the "Recovery System Disk", like Linux Live CD. I hope this

No you've both misunderstood.

It means that you can have a personalised 'session' saved onto a USB device. So you'd be able to log on to your account on any W8 (enterprise) PC.

Sounds like something I will definitely have a use for.

Then why does it want Windows 8 installation files and need 16GB of space (around the same amount a Win 7 install needs).

Just a little question, this function wasn't available on W7 Enterprise?

Hope this is real. Running Windows 8 from a USB drive or external HDD would be great, I've always wanted to.

+1 Definitely agree.

The only thing is how would it work with WGA since its portable. A solution would be cloud based licensing instead of something tied to a machine. You could set up the portable copy of Windows 8 with your Windows Live login. If you tried to log in with the same Windows Live ID on two systems only the most recent copy would be genuine, the other one giving an error saying your ID is logged in elsewhere. The disadvantage to this is there would be nothing for offline users.

This is great. I have tried to get 7 running on a Flash Drive before and it didn't work. So this feature is really great for me.

Nice feature, but almost no-one has such a big USB drive. They're quite expensive.

In France the USB pendrive costs between 37€ and 128€, and the Hard Drive costs near 53€ the 250GB. This will be less expensive to use a Hard Drive.

It works just fine. It's a full copy of Windows 8 Enterprise 7850 and requires activation as normal.

I cracked open a spare old 360 20GB drive and threw it in a usb SATA dock. There's about 8-10GB free. Reboots a lot during final phase of install and takes a long time to copy the Windows image from the .ISO file... it's not massively impressive right now other than that it works (since 7 Embedded and others have had boot from USB for a while), but it's new.

Can you give more information about the type of drive it rejected (stick or drive, old or new, read/write speeds, etc)? I am very curious about the exact requirements...

Seems only work with External HDDs not USB Sticks :-(

I'm sure it could be tricked, weather you'd want to is a different story.

Anyone know if the files for it can be copied over and run from windows 7 (would be great for beta testing to just pop it on an external from a stable windows 7 and not worry about seperate partitions and drives)

Over here in the US, not so cheap. $25 for 8GB on average. However I buy lots of flash drives on black Friday since 8GB $10. Sorry if I am getting off topic.
