I was surprised that this hasn't been posted before:

Quote:
During the Fanfest at E3 2002, Bungie showed a 13 minute movie called 'The Evolution of Halo'. It contained footage from very, very early builds of Halo, and had voiceovers from several Bungie employees. (The primary commentators were Marty O'Donnell, Shikai Wang, and Paul Russell, though there were cameos by others.) Bungie stated unequivocally that this movie would never, ever be released to the net - in its full form. However, there were people with camcorders at the fest, and Deanero was kind enough to send in the footage he shot. Quality isn't great... but content is. (Video quality was relatively low to begin with, and was made worse by HBO staff in an effort to create a file small enough not to choke the bandwidth hosts.)

The captured builds range from early top-down real-time tactics gameplay similar to Myth over to a third person shooter style that was reavealed at Macworld 1999 and finally the FPS version that was shown at an E3 presentation in 2000.

Ahh I remember this video.
It has some pretty good stuff in it, shame none of it has leaked to the public :P

I suppose the pre-2000 builds were for Macintosh only - after Microsoft bought Bungie that changed of course :P

I always wonder how Halo would have turned out if Apple had accepted Bungies offer a bit sooner:

Oh wow, I had no idea about that.
Knowing Bungie, it still would have been a great game, just different to the Halo we all know and love :P

It might have turned out something like this...

(I don't actually own this, I just ripped this section from one of the old BungieTV videos)

0:38 - player as an elite?
0:40 - player as grunt?

While I think it was great that Microsoft bought and helped popularise the series I'm certain the game would have been not only more respected but more appreciated if it was released on a Mac as they initially planned. I don't think I have to tell you how annoying it is to meet an Xbox player who thinks Halo is the greatest thing in the world.

Hi hogsy,

I really think that Halo is respected and appreciated, and above all by the mac people, the ones that more than any other have felt disappointed and betrayed by Bungie-MS venture.
Think that many mac users still play Halo CE and even its demo, which has mods made for it.

BR,
Andrea

It'd be neat to play one of the early betas of Halo as designed for the early Mac. I believe the original top down style was later created into Halo Wars, which didn't do that great, and is probably a good indicator of how well the original Halo would have done on the Mac.

What is sad though is how difficult it is to find a legitimate copy of Halo for the mac. Ebay charges some insane costs for a copy, although I was lucky enough to source a copy locally.

You could recreate any game with a free engine if you had enough time and help.

It wouldn't be anywhere close to the original vision they had however.

Seeing as Bungie bought themselves out from under Microsoft, I don't know what their official stance would be in regards to a release of the old RPG-halo builds. I do know that their programmers were surprised and somewhat happy that we were able to reverse engineer the map format (see WinHME for info regarding my involvement with that whole deal). It's been a dream for a long time now, that they would have released those ancient versions. There's always a chance, though, that it might have become intellectual property of Microsoft, and perhaps, was not included in the sales deal they formed to get out from under Microsoft.

I'll do some digging and see if there's anyone that'll even grant me the opportunity to see more of the unleaked/unreleased game.
