Can anyone recommend a place/site? I would prefer it to be in NZ or aus but doesn't have to be. It doesn't need to have much space (1gb maybe), ftp, php, mysql (or similar). It's just going to really be used for personal use and have as my 'developer page' for my android apps.

If specs don't worry you, then any popular host like 1&1, GoDaddy etc would probably do fine.

I prefer Byethost. It's very stable and cheap.

We've been using Justhost.com at work for a couple years now. They are $4.45/Mo USD or $2.95/Mo AUD (they have an Australian site, so Im guessing Australian servers as well) but will almost always offer you a 20% off coupon code when signing up making it even cheaper. You get 1 domain included, unlimited space, bandwidth, FTP, email etc. They have good uptime and more features than we need at work running a small business commercial site. Its probably a lot more than you need, but they are pretty cheap and have great service.

-'s on their own are invalid. A dash to separate words is fine.

Oh, I need to quit trusting my friend. He also told me that RAID 0 was mirroring and RAID 1 was stripped. He also couldn't install a processor correctly.

Other way around :) 0 is striped, 1 is mirrored.

I use DreamHost... they don't use cPanel or Plesk which can be a bit of a bummer sometimes, but their own control panel has everything you need.

It's unlimited storage and bandwidth, and my site has survived the Digg/Reddit effect (when Digg was popular of course!) more than a few times. In the 4 years I've used them, my site was only down once, and that was for 30 minutes when they moved data center's about a year and a half back. Plus it was in the middle of the night, so not that much of a problem.

Support has been great from them as well and the community is pretty decent (wiki is great).

I pay about $100 a year, but they have offer codes all over the place for when you first sign up. I think I paid about $20 for my first year!

I had GoDaddy for over 5 years and I got fed up with them eventually. Their domain business is awesome, but they suck at hosting and customer support. I switched to HostGator and haven't looked back. Awesome customer support and cheap hosting plans. I have the business plan since I have several large websites, but the cheapo plan should work great for you... I think its less than 5 bucks.

I wont say much about DreamHost, except I had to go back to my HostGator Business plan when i had a VPS because my one site's domain is registered with DreamHost and getting the custom name servers to be accepted was impossible because they weren't recognized by the .ORG registry.

Arch Linux with Liquorix kernel.
If you want a free host, I can recommend 000webhost.com. It's one of the fastest free hosts.
If you want a paid host, KnownSrv.com is the way to go. It's fast, stable and pretty secure.

Funny I got tired of Hostgator, so I went to godaddy and I loved it for a while, but eventually I switched to x10hosting.com which I absolutely love lol...

I would go with x10Hosting, or ByetHost, but I personally like x10 better because it has unlimited space. For getting a domain name, I would go with GoDaddy, or, if you want a freebie, you could use .tk or .co.cc

Well… I’m actually starting my own hosting thing http://www.dannymcguire.co.cc/
But it’s pretty basic, it will have a 3 GB VHD for your site and runs on Windows Server, you can use asp.net or PHP or plan simple html
I will also be allowing the use of Smooth Streaming

I use orangeserve.com : free unlimited cpanel hosting, php, unlimited mysql, unlimited disk space/bandwidth, unlimited email, unlimited everything

Their free server is unstable but their paid server is very realiable and only is a one-time $9.99 fee, they have great support and a great community

I agree with spunker on this one. I use justhost and I have virtually no downtime. You can use the promo code "50off" (without "") to get 50% off of your purchase.

I got different sites hosted at stablehost for some time now and haven't had any issues uptill now. They're running a promo now. They do communicate with their customers in case of reboots or upgrades (not like some others i've been with in the past). They have a plan at 3.95 dollar/month and a -40% promo.

I have tried godaddy hosting and I am completely satisfied with it. It is cheaper when compared to other and also get lots of options. I purchase all my domains from godaddy, I didnt get any problem with godaddy, its really pretty good.

I now avoid dirt cheap companies, when something goes wrong tech support is usually useless.. you get what you paid for.

Ive been running a few small business sites with them, one since 2009. The uptime has been great, and the amount of features you get vs GoDaddy is incredible. One of my clients likes the unlimited email addresses you get. They can have unlimited yourname@yourdomain.com emails with POP3/IMAP and webmail. The last time I checked GoDaddy was only giving one with the cheapest package. It's also really easy to generate a tarball backup file of your entire site.

Tech support has been fine the few times I had to use them, its all done via instant messaging. But I really don't have much experience with them because as long as everything works I can be on my own.
