I sometimes backup my internal hard drive into my external one, but I have data in it too that should be backed up as well. If this drive breaks, I lose ~100 Gb of music.
I should consider buying another drive for backup purpose.

I know i should make frequent backups, but, after 9 years, several computers, and various OSs, i never lost any byte of info (except when i [censored] up Windows and i had to boot up my faithful knoppix CD)

i put my new programs/games/videos/music on my external harddrive as soon as i plug it in the next time (or when i run out of space on my regular hard drive), but i never really made a complete backup of my disk or needed one.
when my computer runs too slow or some suspicious things happen on it, i format my drive and reinstall windows und search for the most improtant things on my ext. drive to copy back, end of story

I have always been a manual backer upper (if that's a word) . Meaning I would just copy paste important root directories onto various external drives and what-not. Just this past month however, I set up a backup on all laptops in the house that I use.
They are all set to back up off the network, each one with its own schedule. I setup a 320GB Seagate Drive in my i7 rig/server just for that sole purpose. I have really enjoyed it so far, haven't had to use any yet, but it is functioning very well and I pretty much forgot it was happening until I read this thread.
I am really glad that I finally gave windows backup a try, doing it over network was alot faster than I expected it to be, the i7 is a gigabit line, but the router does not support it, and all the computers backing up are wireless. I definitely recommend trying it if you haven't already!

I'm a student so I do back up my assignments and stuff, usually once a month or so when I go home, have a 500gb external hdd that is solely for this purpose, I only have 300gb of stuff so I dont need anything more, I also backup to an old computer with 160gb hdd for music and my parents laptop for my school/university work over the years, therefore I have information at least 3 times stored. I should have an online storage solution but the internet in the UK is too slow for this to be effective as uploading will take months.

anyone ever back up their phones? Who knows what will happen to it... (most people don't plan on having their phones stolen)
Yes! Thanksfully before I started Uni i made an Excel list of all my numbers on my phone, came in handy when all the buttons stopped working and having to send it back to Sony Ericsson for a reset and new case

I am REALLY BAD at backing up (REAL back up) so I'm just putting the most most MOST important files (and the files that takes the most place) on my 250 GB harddrive.

I have an UltraBay hard drive I swap out with the optical drive on my ThinkPad and let it back up usually once a week. ThinkVantage Rescue and Recovery works beautifully for bare metal backup and restores.
