I think Slackware or Debian will do. You may also try Gentoo, as compiling your own software may speed it up a great deal, however, it will be quite time-consuming.

Well, if you want many things simultaneosly, install Linux WITHOUT X. Means NO GUI. And NO Graphic Driver, which may easily broke on you. Choose yourself - DSL with GUI, Debian w/o GUI.

Just to point out, any distro can bootup without X starting... It's just one edit away And the tutorial I linked (DSL-N) mention how to do that. The hdd space is another issue, though DSL is alot smaller than a standard Debian-base install (but I do recommend Debian none the less..)

I can't believe they recommended Damn Small Linux This is over 9000 months old and probably as secure as Windows 2000 for now. If you need a tiny distribution, go for Tiny Core instead.
The BSDs should run pretty fine, but a slim debian without X should probably do as well.
