Exactly, it proves nothing! Besides, it is a wiki, you can not trust info on a wiki because it is contributed by the community who 90% of the time say things that are not true for attention.

Yeah, yeah, the good old DooM betas. Show quite a different game. In the beginning you weren't meant to be alone but be supported by up to three fellow marines. And the score system, everyone knew from wolf3d, was in there even in the latest beta. With this decision ID surely choose in favor of action. However the bayonet was a cooler first weapon than the fist with the knucks. And one can only guess what the "shields" in the first beta were.
These are a good piece of history. Can be recommended to everybody interested in the early fps games.

Ah, the Doom 1 alphas I remember playing them on my friend's ibm pc back in the day. Used to live in an apartment & my neighbor's older brother was an official beta tester (they had a computer & internet access & my family didn't have either of those until 1996). I'm pretty sure those betas were my first FPS experiences. So awesome that they run in DOSBox (with the Boxer frontend (http://boxerapp.com/) without any problems
