Hey everyone, you'll be absolutely shocked to know that I've started a little project that I'm playing around with.
The idea is to produce a consumer version of Windows Server 2003 without the frills while achieving optimized performance. I'm attempting to achieve this using WinOCM/Kenneth's excellent NTOSDropCE, therefor completely replacing the Windows kernel. This means that Windows Tokyo is looking to achieve real performance increases from the core - no nLite rubbish, but a legitimate project.
Of course, one can't create a better Windows without bundling better applications. One thing that seriously bugs me about other custom versions of Windows, it's nothing more than just some extra applications bundled in with extra themes. With Windows Tokyo, I'm bundling in only the necessities - to start, a web browser. Windows Tokyo introduces an optimized Gecko browser based on Mozilla Firefox called Windows Tokyo Browser. It achieves a 96/100 on Acid3 and is designed to fit in better with the native Windows experience - however, the appearance is set to change, this is just temporary to get a feel of how it'll look.

So, onto the screenshots. Not much to see, but here's some screenshots of Build 7004.

No guarantees of success or any future distribution, but it's an effort to make a legitimately usable and desirable custom version of Windows.

You can change the buildlab (iirc it's in build.bat and it sets environment variables)

Instead of writing a browser, you could just use k-meleon...
I wonder if you can get any speed optimizations by changing the compiler settings?

I'm not really writing a browser, I'm taking the Firefox source, optimizing it a bit, adding my own theme, and compiling it for the OS. I wouldn't have the foggiest idea where to start building my own homemade web browser - this is Firefox based.

Hey digidude2008, thanks for the interest. :-)
I'm currently using a kernel with the tag "7.0.7005.main().100514-0155". So far, this is the list -
Quote:
7.0.7003.lab01_N(teambld).100001-2400
7.0.7004.lab06_N(teambld).100513-2201
7.0.7005.main().100514-0155

7003 is what i showed off earlier, 7004 was a broken compile, and 7005 has an updated build tag and some other really incredibly minor things. I've upgraded the web browser, so now it's based on the newest nightly of Minefield. It now scores a 97/100 on the Acid3 test, so thanks to the Mozilla team for the improvements there.
Also just did some minor tweaks to make it more like a workstation OS.

I am very interested in this, and it's looking good right now :)
Some questions, if you don't mind:

1. Are you going to TweakNT it to Workstation? If you're making a consumer version, and most apps are stupid and check if the system is NT (as in Kernel, not NT 4.0) Workstation, you should really do that. It might break things though...

2. Are you going to do aesthetic changes? For example, are you going to take out the Themes system, and leave users with that classic style (not that it's ugly), or keep it, make a skin for it, or probably (most likely not, as you said that it was supposed to be sort-of lightweight) use Truetransparency or something.
So is UX an priority?

3. What other kinds of applications you are going to integrate? You can probably attempt to remove bloatware such as Outlook Express, Windows Messenger, etc. and add your own versions (or rebranded, optimized) of such kinds of software.

A suggestion, for the web browser: As yours is a rebranded Firefox/Minefield right now, I recommend using Pale Moon (http://www.palemoon.org/). It's a Windows-optimized version of Firefox, and the homepage says that it is "25% faster". :) It also can import your existing Firefox profile, and retains compatibility with everything such as addons, themes, etc. So why not? :)

I wish you good luck with your project and I hope there are more updates soon. And release it please, I need a new primary OS for my laptop :D

I like the WinVer!
Any news or Beta Testing positions yet?

To answer some questions...

Well, the kernel version itself reports as 7.0 - it's not only some silly reshack or anything, this is an honest to god re-compile of the kernel using NTOSDropCE. I suppose some compatibility issues could arise, like with powertoys for example, but I wonder if there's a way to implement a compatibility mode? I'll look into it.

I'm not ruling out a sweet, clean, classy visual style. Nothing too much though, as eye candy isn't the goal of the OS. Truetransparancy is definitely out though - if a user wants to use that, they can install it themselves no problem.

Yep, I definitely plan on this. Only the basics though.

No, there's no guarantee that this will ever leave my hard drive. It's just a project I've decided to undertake and I thought I'd show off the progress.

Excuse me, why you using Windows 2003 for project named Windows 7.0? Microsoft Windows 7 (NT 6.1) is nearer to Microsoft Windows 7.0.
And why Firefox, not IE? Everyone can install Firefox if wants it.

I'm using NTOSDrop CE which provides the core kernel programming files to optimize Windows more accurately. And Firefox instead of IE because it's got tons better standards, and it's my browser of choice. If you don't like it, you can certainly install another browser.
