Hi all

I'm trying to install OSX DP2 on a 450MHz Powermac G4 (2000) but get a kernel panic immediately after the computer reboots from OS9. Anyone have any ideas why, maybe my particular model isn't compatible.

DP2 stands for Mac OSX Developer Preview 2 (from ~1999)

Well, just a random guess: OSX DP2 is from 1999 and that Powermac is from 2000. Maybe it's too new to run that version of OSX.

You'll have more luck on a G3 with a bad PRAM battery.

I'm not exactly familiar with PowerPC Macs (never touched anything before 10.5 and only on Intel machines) but I'm guessing, same as amon91, that the machine's too new. You could in theory try QEMU but I haven't had much luck with any PowerPC versions of OS X (Haven't used it on any platforms but Snow Leopard, and version 0.9 only).

The very first G4 systems were introduced only a couple months before Apple released DP2 to developers, and even then most G4 orders were delayed because of problems with Motorola (IBM ended up jumping in to bring production of G4 chips up to speed). DP2 might not be compatible with G4 processors at all, Mac OS X Server 1.0 (a shipping product) wasn't made G4 compatible until January of 2000 (with the release of 1.2, around the same time that DP3 was released to developers).

The Developer Previews were released in rapid succession and weren't meant to be compatible across all ranges of Macs. If you want to run DP2, I'd suggest either a Beige or Blue & White G3.

I find this odd, I had almost the exact same mac and I was able to run this. I've since sold it, but a question, have you ever upgraded the motherboard, it won't run with anything better then the sawtooth mobo, and a very minimal amount of ram. You can take the battery out of the board, and any pc cards that aren't necessary should be disconnected.

I'm saying this from what I can remember of my experience, btw, do you have the original disc for the system? Your account doesn't currently have enough posts to access the FTP. If the above doesn't work, you could wait and get the necessary posts and then get a copy off the FTP.

How about Server 1.2v3? I read that Aqua-based os x was delayed and they had to extend the life of Mac OS X Server 1.x so they can boot off of some G4 systems. I am particularly curious about running 1.2v3 on the 1ghz TiBook.

ok so this is what I found. According to how release dates go:

Mac OS X Server 1.2v3: October 27, 2000

Mac OS X DR2: November 10, 1999

Which sets the two operating systems about a year apart. You'd have better luck running Mac OS X Server 1.2v3 or 1.2

RacerX, was DR2 bundled with MacOS 9.x or 8.x?

DP2 runs on AGP "Sawtooth" Power Macs. It runs on the 400 MHz version for sure with no modifications to the OS.

People never read the documentation with these betas.

I have mac os x dp3 running on the exact machine that you have. to run DP1 through DP3 you have to have less than a Gb of ram in the computer or it KP's, try using 768mb
