If I don't get this thing into an install disk, (Where's Winbom? I NEED IT! :P ) is it OK if it's in a WIM?
EDIT: If I upload the WIM, you will need to reapply the bootsector after applying the WIM to a disk.

NOTE: Install all of the Win2k updates! They will restore the Powered branding on Win2k.
As for creating an install disk, well, you're SOL on that.

EDIT 2: Bah, I've given up on creating an installer.
Just use this kernel after you install ALL of the latest Win2k updates.
WARNING: Install IIS first!

Hmm, i've never replaced a Kernel. i'll try to make it to my main PC and try in a virtual machine, though. Do i just start up a DOS boot disk and copy over the old one with the new one?

No, use Replacer.

Damn! i installed the MSAK then all the updates (off Windows Update -- there was 52 of 'em), but it still doesn't identify itself as WP! Time for some Kernel replacement...

Installing the MSAK+Unix Subsystem on one of the fake WPs works pretty well, but don't quote me on that, on my Windows Powered [FAKE] VM, i didn't get updates/

So has anyone yet successfully converted a server install into a powered one as yet.
I'm temped to have a play myself if there was hope of it working without the huge waste of time getting nowhere, as seems to be the case so far.

I have, all of it's bitmaps and resources are now Windows 2000 Powered.

use Daniel's non-NAS Win2k Powered, then install the MSAK.

I'm prepping one of my two Pavilion s7600ns for conversion to WP, so far i've installed Advanced server, but haven't installed updates, the UNIX subsystem and the SAK or setup the updated NTOSKRNL yet.

Hmm, in a new VM i did the upgrade stuff in your order (Updates -> SAK kit -> NTOSKRNL) but it still only shows Windows Powered at the bootlogo. oh well, time for some RESHACKing!

EDIT: Hmm...Well, i've done the replacing for Explorer, Logon.scr and Shell32.dll (in a Kludgetastic manner -- i've never used Reshacker), but in NTOSKRNL most of the resourced have already been replaced. but how is it still showing the Advanced Server logo in every other place though?! Wait, NTLOGON?

If you are preparing your Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance for manufacturing, you will be most interested in the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) pre-install kit sections of the help documentation. The following instructions lead you through the preparations for manufacturing NAS.

Prerequisites

  • Hardware platform that is identical to what will be manufactured
  • Windows 2000 Server, Advanced Server, or Windows® Powered CD
  • Most recent Windows 2000 service pack CD
  • Windows 2000 OEM pre-install kit CD
  • OEM-specific Product Identification (PID)
  • Server Appliance Kit 2.0 CD
  • Microsoft® Services for UNIX CD
  • Microsoft® Service for Netware CD (optional)

To prepare a Windows Powered NAS master operating system image for manufacturing

  1. Install Microsoft Windows 2000 on the boot drive and partition of server appliance hardware platform.
  2. Install Services for UNIX.
  3. Optional: Install Services for NetWare.
  4. Install the latest service pack for Windows 2000.
  5. Install any quick fix engineering (QFE) updates.
  6. Configure the administrator account.
  7. Secure the configuration.
  8. Install the Server Appliance Kit. From the Setup Wizard, select No, do not install the
  9. Server Appliance Kit development environment, and then select Yes, install a Server Appliance Solution. Select NAS as the type of server appliance you would like to create, and accept the default components.
  10. Install the language resource files for the Server Appliance Kit 2.0.
  11. Optional: Add custom or third-party add-ins according to developer’s instructions.
  12. Optional: Install custom branding.
  13. Optional: Install OEMConfigDll.
  14. Run SaPrep.
  15. Run Sysprep.
  16. Optional: If you have added failover capability to your appliance, install the failover operating system by repeating steps 1-12 on the failover partition.
  17. Shut down appliance and remove boot hard drive, which will now serve as the master image.

    Note Never boot from the master disk directly. Only boot using copies of the master.
  18. Copy the master image onto your test units.
  19. Test units thoroughly.

Once your Windows Powered NAS server appliance master OS image and hardware have been validated, you are ready to begin manufacturing the server appliance in quantity.
