I stumbled across an article that says that this "Server Appliance Kit" turns regular Windows 2000 Server into a headless NAS device. It's on the MS download center, can anyone check if it really does turn it into Win2k Powered NAS?
EDIT: YES! It does turn regular Windows 2000 Server into Windows 2000 Powered, complete with the Web UI (machinename:8099) Guess the fabled Windows Powered NAS isn't so rare after all. Daniel's Win2k Powered ISO seems to be fake, mind you. It's a Win2k Adv. Server with reshacked bitmaps.
EDIT 2: Proof:

I forgot to add: Install the NAS appliance (obviously). Note that you have to do this on a Windows 2000 machine, and it may change the boot bitmap to Windows 2000 Powered.

Agreed. Now, time to slipstream SAK 2.01 into a vanilla Win2k disk, install all updates, inject "Windows 2000 Powered NAS" into the disk tags, change setup info, sysprep and pack it.

Damn, i installed this over Advanced Server in Virtual PC and it didn't give me that bootlogo. oh well, i'll wait until you've prepared the ISO to install this on the one of my HP S7600ns that sees no use.

Y'know, the Server Appliance Tasks page reminds me of the Windows Home Server Console... As a comparison, here's the WHS console. in case you're wondering why the window is purple, i'm not supposed to get out of bed a whole lot (recovering from surgery, remember...By the way, a word to run away from really fast: Catheter) so i have to use my mom's laptop.

This just switches the Windows edition to Powered, and installs the web interface.
No, it doesn't change the winver. I installed in on my Windows 2000 Professional SP4, and i got the webinterface to work, but it didn't change the bootscreen, the logos on the startmenu. What are all those bitmaps in explorer.exe and ntoskrnl.exe for then? I dont't think this myth is confirmed yet -.-

Can anyone get me the dimensions for each side of the Win2K box? i want to make a mockup box/CD Case for PortalCake's disc. note that in case my design somehow manages to be convincing, there will still be clear proof it's fake.

he's slipstreaming it and making it change setup and the logos. It's mainly as a curiosity, i guess. i'd use it, i have a spare computer that would make a decent W2k-era NAS.

AFAIK WP was never sold on CDs.
Probably not on generic Microsoft ones, but it was definitely available on OEM "restore" CDs bundled with some NAS servers eg the Dell PowerVault. Making one of these CDs into a generic installation CD would be one of the few ways of being sure of having a genuine version of "Windows [2000] Powered for NAS Server".

These OEM CDs are of "Windows Powered" though, not just normal 2000 plus the SAK, which may or may not result in the true "Windows Powered" - not to cause an argument or anything, just saying that a genuine CD is the only way of being sure that you have the true "Windows Powered".
