Nope. Why not? My home server has been out of commission since Tuesday when I moved. It's being brought back up temporary at my friends house to do some backups from the BA server.

Backing up is not a warranty. Of course, if you save EVERY snapshot of your data (and know where is it), it is OK. But if you are regularry syncing, one spoiled file (may be, due to fs failure, or error on saving, or just a bug in a program or os) will be spreaded in backups.

Now that you mention it, there was that parking space I was in this morning...
I dont back up enough and I have lost stuff because of it. I usually back up important nonchanging data like pictures and video to CDs and nowdays DVDs. I use my flash drives for other stuff.
I need to get a big 'ol external HD so i can keep some serious backups.

I have spent some money and organised a backing up system. I have my storage server that has all my HDDs with all my stuff and there is one 500GB HDD that is my backup drive. All my computers in my house backup the newly added stuff from the pc's onto this 500Gb drive at 10pm every night and after a month old the files are deleted from the server. If one of my drives with all my stuff were to die, i have two HDDs that have all my stuff except my movies and tv shows ( but my favourites). One of these drives is in a cupboard in my house and the other is at a friends house, incase my house were to burn down or something. All my photos and music are on a skydrive account on the internet as well.
So i think i have a good home backup system, if somthing were to happen.

To anyone who has automatic backup systems, MAKE SURE IT IS STILL WORKING!
Last night I went to make an archive to my other computer from the server, only to find the backup had not run in 4 days. Keep a close eye on these sorts of things. Even though I get an e-mail to tell me, I get quite a few from various backup software and didn't realise this one was missing.

I need to backup about 40GB to my 500GB external hard drive. Right after I got it my external my old hard drive broke and I had not backed up yet. I hope that doesn't happen again.

I check daily about my backup Andy, and i have only had a few times when the backup has not been done because of updates and failures with my system and i usally then do the backup.

I backup my most important documents on another HDD every day with Cobian Backup in a cycle: 1 full backup + 4 incremental on the following days. It saved me several times when Firefox went insane and has corrupted and then overwritten it's profile files. I put all my source code on SVN, so it's also backed up. Non critical files are not backed up, but they can be either redownloaded from the Internet or copied from friends with whom I shared them.

I had to because i was running a WFP patcher someday in October, and when it restarted.... It FAILED to run msgina.dll because it was corrupt. So i asked my uncle to come over and he came after a few days. It was Halloween and I didn't have time AND he came at 8:30 PM. I was also ordering a 250GB hard drive (IDE) for my main PC around that time, which was the one with the corrupt system file. So when he came, he could only see what was wrong and see the 250GB hard drive, sitting on my computer desk. So he came someday on the first week of November and put the 250GB HD in the PC and i started the Knoppix live cd. I backed up my Virtual Machines, ISOs of betas, our iTunes Library, my Roblox Places, Zencast podcasts and my Mom and Dad's Business folder.

Few horror stories to share:
1. Even if you don't have your computer hooked up to the internet, put a virus/malware program on it. I had a computer up in my room that I used exclusively for gaming. I didn't put a virus protector on it, nor did I back it up, because it was a stable system with no connection to the outside world. I used a flashdrive for sneakernetting files, and thought that was safe.
Yeah, right.
My friend is an idiot, and didn't put any kind of protection (always wear protection, kids) on his laptop. I shared some files with him, and the Win32/Parite virus got on my flash drive. After it had infected half of my system, I decided to connect it to the internet, and DL AVG.
563 instances of Win32/Parite virus found.
I did a quick backup, reformat, reinstall of my system, but it killed my weekend.
2. Computer connected to internet with no antivirus, gets AV09. Screwed, lost all work on machine.
Let my ameteurish and idiotic mistakes be a lesson to you

I might have to find another drive that i might have lieing around or i need to invest into another or new one. My 300Gb backup IDE drive is full, well i have 15Gb left and that will only last me 2 or 3 days. And my un attached backup drive needs to be written on and is full. Why cant Samsung make a 5Tb HDD SATA 3 drive within the next month.

Learning from the harsh lessons of my HDD crashing sometime earlier this year, I've decided to backup my data on CDs, USBs and on SkyDrive, usually on a weekly basis.
