There is an FTP service which is separate to IIS but works well with it, since it was also MS designed.
Apache can be more difficult if you don't know what you're doing, as can IIS, but I prefer GUI's to text based configurations because it's so much quicker to change things, and there is less chance of getting syntax incorrect, etc. IIS was a doddle to set up once Hounsell showed me some useful tutorials.

I think it's slower now, I never had an issue with the old server and now pages are taking a couple of seconds longer to load. It's not a huge difference, but certainly noticeable and annoying.
