Hello! I created this topic to allow other users to post reviews (and discussions) about Linux Mint (one of my favorite non-Windows OSes). Knock yourselves out!!!

Linux Mint is a very good Linux distro in my opinion.

One its point of strength is probably it being Ubuntu-based.
No doubt Ubuntu is the most common Linux OS nowadays, so finding information about it is as easy as searching on Google.
Anyway Linux Mint it's quite popular too.
Plus, Ubuntu packages are usually well made and probably you can find one for every application you need.
The out of the box experience is just perfect (even on live session), there's preinstalled software for everything, even multimedia codecs.
MGSE probably aren't the greatest effort in UI development, but they can sure help GNOME 2 users in the migration to GNOME 3.
And anyway, some Ubuntu users might like Mint's GNOME more than Unity.

I'll be honest, never used Mint in the long term (I just tried out some versions of it), but I guess it's like Ubuntu, an OS that just works.
Don't get me wrong, basically any Linux OS just works, just some are easier to get things working on.
I think that's the case for Ubuntu and Mint.

Come on, why does this topic even exist? It's not a bad distro, but you don't need to boost about it like this. :p

I switched to Linux for a bit there while some of my hardware was being stupid. It really is a great Distro for Non-Linux Users, if only because its UI is so much like Windows. Although, I'll stick to Windows until the time comes for my PC to Die.

Well, here's my review.

As a new Linux user,I was looking for something user friendly and easy to install. Mint 12, I tested in a virtual machine. To be honest,I liked it. Although I was a little confused about installing various packages, it all cleared up. Linux Mint is a great distro, although the X window system crashes sometimes. Virtualbox.

If its one of your favourites, why not make a review yourself? Making up a topic so that others can write the content is a bit lazy in my opinion, I mean if someone wanted to write a review they would start their own topic. Although this is fairly equivalent to asking a question, I guess.

I prefer Ubuntu (with Gnome), but Linux Mint was OK I guess, and a smaller install if I remember correctly.

I find Linux Mint to be the best Debian based Linux OS, but it's install is flawed.. Whatever happened to Linux being meant for old or out-of-date computers? I can't get it to install on any computers with 2.00 GHz or lower and 2GB of RAM

I recently upgraded my main server (email & media primarily) from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid) to Mint 13 (Maya) with the Mate desktop primarily because of bugs in the Unity desktop, and thus far I am pleased. The upgrade was straightforward, most of the changes to configuration files were easy to copy over with the major time sink involving Bacula.

The only major issue I have at this time is an interaction between the AMD catalyst driver (12.6) and Firefox. Sometimes when I open or close Firefox, X will freeze (ctl+alt+bksp to restart), crash to login screen, and sometimes a hard lock requiring a system reset. I have been careful to only open one firefox window immediately after booting whilst searching regularly for a fix of some sort. I heard a rumor that a near future kernel bug might fix the problem, so fingers crossed.

Other minor issues include:
Not all the gnome-games run, some might not be installed.
Ubuntu hates root, so mail to root goes to nobody. Certain system tasks (like cron) still send mail to root.
Right clicking on the desktop opens a menu with a terminal (good!), the termail starts in ~/Desktop (bad)
There are three package managers in the menu: Synaptic Package Manager, Software Manager, and Gdebi Package Installer.

Linux Mint: All the goodies, usability, and seamlessness of Ubuntu, minus the backwardness of Unity :)

I've been hearing a lot about Cinnamon and Mate... Good and bad about both. I was wondering what the differences are? And if someone switched to one(or both?) from Mint LXDE, how they would compare each to LXDE in terms of menu set-up/placement, task bar look and feel, amount of visual effects(I have almost none), and over-all user control. Thanks!!

I have transitioned from Ubuntu to Mint because I like the user interface of Cinnamon a lot better. It has a much more traditional feel to it. I also like that it still retains compatibility with most Ubuntu programs. It seems to boot up and run quicker than most other linux distros that are as fully featured, which is an added plus.

Mint is perfect if you want Ubuntu without all the graphical unity [censored]. It also looks better then Xubuntu or Lubuntu IMO.

I've been running Mint 14 on my testing machine from a USB drive for a few months now. It's the most polished distro that I've tried thus far, and I like the UI (MATE) a lot better that straight up Unity.
