Tried DD-WRT after OpenWRT, scared the [something] out of me:
After install I've had a padlock LED only lighting, I thought I've bricked my router, then I discovered you need to plug your computer to WAN port.
But it still lacks something, I can't find wifi VLAN option, I've had this on OpenWRT.
Rest still in tests. (Padlock icon still not fixed)
Did you install the latest firmware from the FTP ?
Also what revision is the router, on the FTP there are different images for v1, v2, v3 and v4
I think your router has the Atheros Chipset, so making a thread here would give you support for any problems (Make sure you are on latest firmware or they will just tell you to upgrade)

I've been using DD-WRT on the same Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 since about 2005. It's been updated a couple times through the years obviously, but it was originally a FON bundle for $35. The original FON version of DD-WRT was relatively unstable, however after first moving to the main DD-WRT branch in 2006 it's been like a rock.

I accidently voted DD-WRT but meant Open-WRT. I use Open-WRT and it's great, I use the https://github.com/Nut-Bolt/luci-theme-bootstrap theme and it looks nice. It's functional, open source and the developers are much more open in comparison to DD-WRT.

Just to avoid confusion - DD-WRT is also open source.
Yes, but DD-WRT does not include some of it's source code. It also locks down things like the branding and themes because they are afraid people will compile the firmware to flash and sell it on E-Bay. Kind of crappy, if you ask me.

DD-WRT is a hell of a lot easier to setup and manage, but once you throw 'interesting' hardware into the mix it goes INSERT COIN. OpenWRT never does. It boils down to your level of experience and what you want to do with the box. Me, I run DD-WRT on my supported WAPs and leave the custom iptables haxoring to my Linux server.

I have some hardware that is supported by none of them because a lot of routers have small ROMs or other differences. We should make a seperate thread in for router flashing.

I really like how customizable ddwrt is and it seems that any single little thing you could want your router to do standard is included in the distribution. That said, OpenWRT is really cool and can be coupled with CJDNS to create private ad-hoc mesh networks which is what I'm getting into right now. I also have a router running Tomato and I have to say it has a slick UI and I love all of the graphs but it's not like I'm in my router's config 24/7.
