The great thing of the Ubuntu 11.10, is the Linux 3.0 kernel, a lot of problem with the older version is corrected... but as always, new problem can occur.
I have update (from 11.04 to 11.10) 14 machines (from a Lab), without problems. But my personal machine, after upgrading, some day after, I didn't boot anymore, so I had to do a fresh install.
And I didn't like the Unity desktop (too slow for me). I'm using XFCE with it (not Xubuntu) but official Ubuntu with XFCE4 package.

You can get the 3.x series Linux kernel with just about ANY newly updated Linux distro (except ones focused on long-term stability or older computers). It's not exclusive to Ubuntu.

That's sure. But I just say about the Ubuntu... with Ubuntu 11.04, you will have Linux 2.x, to update do Linux 3.0 is very difficult, and some times you can get problems.
And with Ubuntu 11.10, you already have a Linux 3.0 kernel.
But, of corse, a lot of other linux distribution already have Linux 3.0 kernel, or you can install it by your own.

I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. To get my netbook's touchpad working is very(x9) frustrating. It simply doesn't work. Also, since 11.04, you can't remove Firefox AND Chrome, you must stick with one of them. I wish I could get my distro stable.

I had a look at Unity and found it kind of cute. However this whole idea of saving space is not new (although it got more and more forgotten in the days of KDE and Gnome). I personally like WindowMaker which has a dock looking a bit like in Unity, but apart from that does not much more than managing windows. It is very fast and stable, and also it looks good IMO. BTW there's a group of people who revived development on it in the last 1..2 years (I happen to be one of them). I think it is worth a look (sometimes the 'back to the roots' paradigm is not a bad idea at all).

Theseem real problem seems to me to be that even the present latest version doesn´t allow a really wide range of software usually running with windows.

I use Ubuntu, but I have always preferred GNOME to Unity.
Unity is simply a shell that runs on top of GNOME. It can be uninstalled, or you can swap it out for GNOME 3, GNOME 2.x, XFCE, KDE, etc. Personally, I like the old GNOME setup, but Unity works for me as well so I'm not complaining.
