Everytime I try to install NeXTSTEP, after choosing the EIDE and ATAPI drivers from the beta driver disk
I run into a kernel panic. For whatever reason, instead of reading the disk, the CD drive makes loud clacking noises
and never loads any data.

Any suggestions?

---

I feel like I'm approaching the installation the wrong way entirely, can anyone give me a good guide as too how to do this?

Donno.... which drivers are you exactly using? how much RAM in the PC? how big is the hard disk?

nextstep is ... very particular about what machines it'll run on.

I would appreciate more information here.

What release of NeXTSTEP are you trying to install?

What are the specifications of the system that you are trying to get the OS installed on?

it doesn't get more spoon fed than this...

http://gunkies.org/wiki/Installing_NeXTSTEP_on_Qemu

Even for other emu's its basically this for a "modern" machine...

I was install NeXTSTEP 3.3 on VMware Fusion 4.1
First,the virtual machine's memory is 128M or 256M,hard disk size is 1GB or 2GB.
Then, you choose Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI Adapter from driver disk.img, and choose Primary/Secondary(Dual) EIDE and ATAPI Device Controller from beta driver.img.
You can watch the video "NeXTSTEP 3.3 Install in VMware on OS X"in Youtube.

The problem is, that NeXTSTEP freaks out, if you try to install it on a machine (virtual or not) with more than 64MB of RAM.

If you limit the amount of RAM to 64MB or less, you should be good to go.

I _think_ you can raise it after the installation has completed, but I'm really unsure about this at the moment.

Cheers,

joe

its similar in Rhapsody but the limit is higher.
The Darwin 1.3 old Nextstep inherited bootloader code sets 512 mb as usable maximum.

OP, a pre-made VMWare image of NextStep 3.3 can be found and downloaded with an easy search.

If you want to install your own, download all seven floppy disk images and an iso of the OS.

And like others have said, don't set the ram over 64mb. Also, you cannot make your HDD over 2gb. 1gb should be enough anyway. Also, you must pre-allocate the disk space.

Wasn't NEXTStep supposed to be for special hardware only?

NextStep is an OS created by Steve Jobs after he was thrown out of apple (We all know they took him back) It's based on UNIX and it's sortof borrowing from OS/2 as shell IMO. I mean..It feels like it lol. All in all, Very interesting OS, MyComputerHelp, you should take a look at some videos or try it.

Need more details, like is this a virtual or physical machine? If virtual the panic most likely is caused by too much ram, needs to be like 64MB or less. If physical, it might not like the CDROM drive--I had NextSTEP KP when a unsupported CDROM drive was in use and it's very picky about the models it does support... I basically had to keep swapping drives until I found one it was happy with.

The best platform to run Openstep 4.2 is Virtualbox 4.1.8

Any newer and networking fails.

I have a full 1280x1024 VB VM with DHCP available to upload for you, once I reach the right access here for the FTP sites.

Way cool. I have NS 3.3 running under VMWare, but only a few applications, and not a lot of screen resolutions ( stock 1024x1024 ).

What is nessessary to get fpt access? Im here now, and have a lot of windows exprence, bunch of unix/linux experence, and was directed here from the NeXTSTEP.org forums.

Its a shame that that tutorial is for the i386 port of next and not the 68k. All the good softwares were for 68k.

Has anyone had a crack at installing the 68k version on anything other than NeXT hardware? I have to admit, I know little about the internals of the black hardware.
