I tried to install chicago58s in windows 3.1, with setup.exe
after rebooting and then startup logo, only this is shown.



So this build could not be set up in VMware Workstation?

PS: I successfully started up this build in MS VPC, despite some errors booting the system.

it can be set up, just make sure you're running VMware in 4.x compatible mode and run setup.exe from DOS

you must use dos boot disk and run it in vmware4.x

Hi TheCollector1988, glad to see your reply and, I rebuilt VM as 4.x compatible.

Then reinstall MS-DOS... run setup.exe from DOS
yet it just says the program requires Microsoft Windows.


I noticed the setup31.exe, maybe this is for installing from MS-DOS.
This program has been run, and returned Error message and unable to continue (sorry for not printing screen right now... I forgot it. I will have to format again and install MS-DOS then run setup31, so I should be back after several minutes )

I got it to run with VMWare 8, when creating a new virtual machine make sure to click the "Advanced" tab and continue, evenually it will show a compatibility page with it set to VMWare 8, click on that drop-down menu and select VMWare 4x.

Thanks, compatibility has been set to VMware 4.x.
In VMware I tried MS-DOS 5, 6. Edited config.sys with DOS=LOW and copied setup files into HDD, ran dossetup.bat and completed installation. (under instrucitons in MCB, thouth it's VPC there)
After reboot the startup logo showed, and then stuck at blackscreen. (this time not display bad codes, just blackscreen with a cursor)

This the situation in VMware. Wlile I have successfully installed & booted 58s in VPC 2007 (on another PC some months ago), the progress in VMware seems not to be so perfect

here are the CPUs of my 2 PCs:
With VPC 2007: Intel Pentium E2160 (desktop)
With VMware 8.0.1 : Intel Core i3 M 330 (laptop)
(they have different CPUs, one is kinda old & desktop, another is newer and mobile. Would this be the reason of failure?)

Try installing it on VPC 2007, then converting the VHD to VMDK using this: http://www.starwindsoftware.com/downloads


Let me know if that works. Remember when setting to still keep it at 4x.

Hi there, this has been checked, and also remains blackscreen after boot logo (on my laptop, Intel i3 M 330).

Yet, I installed VMware on the other pc (which is that one with Intel E2160), and used this vm again, then it worked properly and could see desktop.

Thanks anyway... Seems getting weird, this vm does work, but might depend on hardware of physical PC... would it be configuration issues?

and by the way, the snapshot is fine, even on this not working laptop. Just revert to it and the desktop is there.

The way it looks, I don't think it's possible to install Chicago 58s in VMware. You can (successfully) install it in Virtual PC.
