It's the start menu. Look at the bottom right tile and you will notice something -- 'Desktop'.
We all know the desktop is there, I think the OP was talking about what if it wasn't there-could Windows 8 operate purely with Metro, and I'm pretty sure it can't, Windows 8 needs Windows. Metro is only a small part of Windows 8-not only the start menu, there are also Metro apps, but still only a small part.

Midori? Please. Midori is nowhere near ready for use for the masses and it would be stupid of Microsoft just to throw away the years of development that they've poured into NT.

I think it's pretty clear from the amount of extra effort that's gone into NT in this latest revision and the fact that Midori has been quiet for a number of years that Midori as a project has either failed, or has serious underlying issues that won't be resolved soon. Telling also is the recent shift back towards native code - after years of .NET stealing the Microsoft Development headlines, C++ has seen a definite resurgence lately.

I am an idiot. I said "messes" instead of "masses". Corrected.
I would think with the way Metro is implemented it simply wouldn't be possible to have it where there is no desktop at all. Metro is simply too restricted for that.

I've used windows 8 since it was first leaked on 7850 and on ward its a mobile os meant to take on android and apples iOS. However Microsoft is blurring the lines between a truly mobile operating system and desktop OS. My view is that metro overtly simplifies an OS that was already intuitive for the user. It makes it more applefied so it dumbs down the user interface such that the Microsoft is decreasing productivity in order to get more of a user base mostly for touch interface people and desktop / start menu is the first victim. There you go since I've used every windows 8 build ever released or publicly leaked.

I disagree in some respects. Most current/beta OS versions are beginning to blur the lines between App-based (mobile) OS and Window-based (traditional desktop) OS. Look at GNOME3, look at Ubuntu's Unity, look most of all at OSX.
You also made the mistake of thinking that the classic windows interface is intuitive. For example, let's say there's some person who has never used or observed the use of a computer. Hand them an iPhone or an android tablet, and they will probably figure out how to use it (assuming the device is unlocked and the screen is on). Hand the same person a windows 7 laptop. Assuming they figure out that the trackpad is used to control the machine, the concept of clicking is inherently unintuitive.
Those of us that have always used computers think it makes perfect sense, but in reality, it is not very intuitive. Touch UIs are only going to become more popular with time, and as such, everybody wants to have the capability in place when it becomes standard on most computers.
