I had this problem on my PC. The hard drive in Settings of the VM is probably SCSI. The setup should pass if there is an IDE hard drive, but there is a SCSI hard drive. You will have to copy drivers from VMware Tools, for which i don't know you have onto a IMG to pass the installation. After the Setup is inspecting your system configuration, when it goes to a blue screen, just press the key which is written at the bottom (ex. F6), insert the drive and off it goes.

Currently I'm using Windows 2000 Professional / XP Professional on the VMware with virtual SCSI disk. It just works fine and there are no installation problems.

Set the Virtual HDD to IDE.
He needs to make a new VM because he chose Windows NT to skip Easy Install, but then the disk is SCSI and i still didn't figure out how to change it.
If this is the case, then try this: I'm assuming VMware Fusion is near enough the same as VMware Workstation in some form, but for Macs. When making it, tell VMware not to use a disc, then choose your OS. This should skip all of that stupid Easy Install BS. Mount the ISO when you access the settings of the VM.
