Windows RT is made for ARM Processors, and all the new Android Tablets and Smartphones runs on ARM. Do you think it would ever be possible to run Windows RT on a Smartphone or Tablet? Maybe on a Samsung Galaxy SII? I know it's a smartphone, it's small and is not made for running PC OS. But just for fun? It would be cool to have Windows on a Smartphone.

What's your opinion? Do you think it's possible and would you like to install/hack Windows on a Tablet/Smartphone..

PS: I'm already running Windows XP on Bochs, on my SII, but it's slow because it needs to emulate a different processor.

No. Windows RT will only run on certain Microsoft-approved devices. You can, however, install Windows 8 on any old x86 tablet provided it's new enough.

xda-dev's already working on making this a reality, and based on what they've done with Windows Phone 7 devices I don't see why not. :-)

Adding to what Derf said though, it'll be only devices with a large developer following, if any. Maybe the galaxy and nexus devices, Sony's also seem quite popular now.

Linux Love whats there to say that Windows RT can't be modded to run on non Microsoft certified devices?

I'm willing to bet in this case we will see other phones not approved run Windows RT.

As long as there's documentation and tools, nothing is impossible. Although getting platform-specific drivers is a diferent story.

Well, that statement was speaking for officially running Windows RT, not about hacking it onto something else.

We will see when it comes out, Windows 8 RT isn't being sold and has secure boot so it may not be easy. The second issue is drivers and about the only way I see it working is if an official Windows 8 RT device has the same or very similar hardware to an Android device then maybe the same drivers could be used.

Also I wonder how hard it will be to get something else to boot on a Windows 8 RT tablet like Ubuntu or Android. The x86/64 tablets have the advantage here. But Bluestacks is working on getting their Android app emulator to work on both x86/64 and ARM. The Surface Pro looks to be the best of both worlds as it can experience the touch based Windows 8 but also run legacy Windows apps.

With the recent announcement though, I'd say one tablet in with a chance would be the Nexus 7, due to it's price/performance ratio. The only issue could be internal storage, though the USB could allow for external storage.

Considering they only ported WP7 to phones that shared the same SoC as a real Windows Phone, I'm not sure what makes anyone think Windows RT will be anything different.

And hell, WP7 was based on CE, which is shared-source, so it's even easier to get an understanding of the platform there. NT is quite a different beast, and will most likely require a new HAL for different ARM SoCs. That's not something your average XDA hacker can just cook up.
