Yes, I wasn't questioning it's similarity, but rather saying that it is similar and that's because Microsoft want to make a good OS for tablets.

So, what are your impressions about the RP?

I think that if MS can get some traction in the tablet market, Windows 8 will be a huge success mainly because it will be one of the first logical tablet systems for a business. I don't think it will directly affect the Ipad as much as people say it will because the ipad is still the best consumer tablet with all of it's great features like Itunes integrated. On the other hand, if Windows 8 doesn't get very far with tablets and Microsoft doesn't put the start menu back in the actual release (and it doesn't look like they will), Windows 8 will be a bigger flop than Vista.The funny thing is that the real reason Vista failed in my opinion is that the world (mainly it's hardware) wasn't ready for it. I can run Vista just fine on an i7 PC with 8Gb RAM, but put it on a p4 and I experience speeds that haven't been equaled since I tried to run Windows 95 on a low end 486. Now, do you think there were more people running i7s or p4s in 2007? (Yes, I know that i7 came out in nov. 2008. I'm just making a point) Windows 8 is fine speed wise, but I think that people are just not quite ready to leave behind their desktops with their regular old start menus. Microsoft may be looking into the future, but our readiness to accept it will determine Windows 8's fate.

Or at least that's my opinion.

I was wondering the same. Either way it's still not enough to convince me to switch to a tablet... Well I have been considering it as my laptop is slowly dying but it certainly would not replace my main desktop and I'm yet to see a tablet which is at an affordable price.

Yeah, I kinda wondered that myself when I saw the story, especially since my desktop has "Microsoft Surface" software on it. I guess that's just their name for any and all touchscreen devices?

My favorite part about it is that I can already see what it will look like after 5 months of usage. That fancy little stand in the back of the device looks like cheap thin plastic, and I can almost guarantee will break off/no longer stand after some usage. People are going to complain.

Then surface 2.0 will come out in 2 years with a sleek design, and more metal parts.

Just one problem, dude. The case and stand are made from a magnesium-based material called VaporMG. In other words, they're ALREADY made of metal.

I'm pretty excited for it really, a whole new look and hopefully a whole new operating system. What I'm not excited for is the advertisements. I feel like Microsoft runs ads that constantly talk about being better than Apple; but I want to see an advertisement that just talks about what they can do, their new features, and doesn't have to try and talk about being "better" than the other guy.

I totally agree on that. There's way too much competition between Apple and MS. I think that the Macs are great for some things and PCs are great for others.

I'm not a Mac Hater, just a Microsoft Lover. Macs are OK, I just prefer the Windows OS if only because it features a lot more customization then Macs, and since I've been using Windows my entire life. Macs are good are for what they're used for.

Some cosmetic fixes too, and additionally ripping out the last traces of Windows 7 Start Menu code.
Also, some old Windows logos & icons left behind (like Windows Update) were finally removed and replaced with the new flat blue flag.

Take a good look at the picture of Windows 95 they have in that blog post, specifically the Programs listing and the Explorer window. Do you see what I see?

I hate Windows 8, the Metro design is boring and confusing, and why would they even think to swapping the Start menu with what I call The "Metro Menu" is beyond me since the start menu has been apart of Windows for 17 years.

Computers are one of the few areas where "tradition" and "keeping things as they are" are demonstrably bad ideas. It doesn't matter that the Start Menu has been part of Windows for 17 years. It's time to move on.

I partially agree. Change is good but if you're customers are used to something and you force them to learn or try something new it can really come back and bite you in the behind (Gnome is a good example). I think Windows for PC's should at least be slowly expanded upon, changes such as grouping programs in the taskbar or even gadgets were interesting ideas and I'd like to see Microsoft expand on them more.

I agree that change can be bad, but only when it makes things more complex for the average user. Metro does the opposite. It simplifies common tasks. Power users like us will have some difficulty, but we aren't the majority of Microsoft's market share. And GNOME 3's major failing was that it made things more difficult for anyone who used it, not just power users.

PS: I never liked Microsoft's gadget implementation, to be honest, but the idea was interesting.
