I'm trying to recreate pt_winxp_pro_vl_iso.img (Windows XP Pro Volume PT-PT SP0), but all i could find out about this edition through Google was its SHA1 (ABBF975C074AAF635E9D989EE216FC79AB1DB1A3) at this page, it had a program called "Share MSDN.exe" that no longer works.

My first ever Windows XP CD was a modified version of this edition, all files have time/date set to 20/11/2001 12:00:00, except the following:

DPCDLL.DL_
OEMBIOS.BI_
OEMBIOS.DA_
OEMBIOS.SI_
PIDGEN.DLL
SETUPP.INI
SETUPREG.HIV
WINNT.SIF

It seems it wasn't originally Volume, but Retail or OEM... I also have this versions:

pt_winxp_home_oem_iso.img
pt_winxp_pro_iso.img

All i have for now is the command line to recreate the above 3 ISOs:

Can anyone confirm what is the closest edition to xx_winxp_pro_vl_iso.img (in your language or any other language), and if the missing files can be found on other ISOs or manually recreated?

Did you change your PC's timezone to the appropriate one? (be aware of DST!) Because -g does NOT work for 2.46.

The rest is the same as what I have in a batch file... as well for English as Dutch... (apart from the -g switch)

English ISOs have hex(0x833D) = E4 (no -g switch) with GMT-08:00.
Portuguese ISOs have hex(0x833D) = 00 (-g4) with GMT 00:00, if -g is not used it will have hex(0x833D) = 04 and wrong SHA1.

Because the command works for all the other ISOs, the problem seems to be those 8 files with the different time/date, it seems my VL ISO was created from another ISO, so i believe some files are not the correct ones. I just found out i had 5 SP0 English ISOs (Home OEM/Retail, Pro OEM/Retail/VL) forgotten in a folder, I'm going to compare all of them and try to figure out which files are different. Usually English ISOs have less differences than ISOs from other languages.

How many Dutch Windows XP SP0 ISOs do you have?

EDIT: I just compared the 8 files from all other English Windows XP versions with the files from en_winxp_pro_vl_iso.img and they are all different, so there is no chance of recreating the VL ISO since those files are unique to the version. The only one that probably is correct is SETUPP.INI, since it can manually be created/edited. SO i guess I'll just keep searching for the ISO...

When I compare Dutch and English RTM VLK versions with the files you mention the the only files that are the same are pidgen.dll and setupreg.hiv.

The file WINNT.SIF cannot be found in neither of the VLK images...

Read the switches list (CDIMAGE.EXE /?), -g is used for set the timezone to UTC if i remember correctly and not to set it on a specific timezine (like 2.52p)...

EDIT: btw, since you're referring to a website in your search of the original hash... Did you know Microsoft provides them on their'e website? You wil only need a MS Live account and you can see everyting available at MSDN/Technet (no downloads, only info)

EDIT: It seems SETUPP.INI is another problem... This is SETUPP.INI for all my XP SP3 editions:

But for SP0, Extradata is different between all versions, except for XP Pro VLK PT and EN, they are the same because it seems my VLK was created from Retail PT + VLK EN...

So I guess there is no way of recreating the ISO, since there is no way of recovering the original OEMBIOS.* files and original Extradata value. At least it works, so I'll keep it until I somehow find a clean version of VLK PT.

There could a "WXPFPP_PT" iso be found via torrents but it's updated to SP2 (says the description and the file size) but not all the files are updated when slipstreaming... maybe the files you need are still in tact in that ISO and could be used for re-creating the RTM VLK ISO...

P.S. since you are also collecting orginal XP iso's... do you have EULA v2 from the English Windows XP Pro Reatil RTM?

I don't know what you mean by EULA v2... the English XP Pro Retail RTM i have is en_winxp_home_x86_build2600_iso.img, 496.568.320 bytes, SHA1 B273C8D41E3844E3E46722F52F5A4CF9F206C8D0. Is this what you're looking for?

my mistake... I meant OEM... OEM was brought out very early and has also an updated EULA. (to my knowledge only in English)

He was posting on Filesonic before it went down, and is now selling ISOs at 10$ each. I doubt he has specific ISOs, he probably has the same MSDN/Technet access as everybody else, but I'll ask him for Windows 2000 and XP Pro VL ISOs anyway


Thanks for the deep comparison. According to your findings, I won't be able to recreate the original pt_winxp_pro_vl_iso.img without the original files, so I'll settle with a custom version, since I probably will never find the original CD/ISO anyway. I'll play with some files tonight...

i think i got a xp volume license disc at home its not msdn or technet and i don't know ifs its rtm or got a sp1 am busy tonight but will install it in a vm and report back. you after the rtm volume disc files ain't u ?

Yes, I'm after the XP Pro VL SP0 / RTM, but in European Portuguese language. The one you have is PT-PT or EN-US language?

Also, no need to install, just check the CD root for WIN51* files (WIN51IP.SP* is the service pack added), and the content of i386\SETUPP.INI, those alone tell you which version you have, and for the language, check the contents of the *.HTM files also in the CD root.

If I remember correctly I have read somewehere he works for (or has connections with) HP. Thats why he have access to all the ISO's. (which I already have downloaded in Dutch and English while FS was still working)

Could he have access to ISOs that are no longer at MSDN/Technet, like Windows 2000 Pro/Server? That would be great, as I had already considered buying used CDs if I could find them at an affordable price. I found a couple but the sellers were a lot greedy...

I think he just means he lost the files on Filesonic, nobody is dumb enough to delete a local file after uploading it somewhere... is it? I mailed him anyway and asked for 3 ISOs and "proof" of ownership before any transaction (mount the ISO, open explorer, take a printscreen, send me the picture), so I can see the CD label and files' date/time, that way I'll know for sure if he has the right ISO or if he is just trying to scam me...

The SP2 WXPVOL_PT from the torrent was manually slipstreamed, as some files retained the original date (11/20/2001,12), so I'm betting those files are equal to the original WXPVOL_PT.

I just compared the EN VOL RTM to SP1a (I don't have SP1) on that 2 files but no luck there... even unpacked the files are totally different...

The VOL iso you already had (the one you started this topic with) does not have these 2 files? or is was it just an OEM/FPP to VOL the lazy mans way...

I just browsed MSDN and the ISO is available! I don't remember being there the last time... do you know anyone with a MSDN/Technet account that could possibly upload it to BetaArchive?

EDIT: The WXPVOL_PT i started with seems to be made from WXPOEM_PT (which i don't have) + WXPVOL_EN, but I'll dig into that later on (no free time for now), because there is no official SHA1 for Pro OEM that i know of.

I have an ISO of WXPVOL_PT (I even used that as my main OS in the last few years of my Pentium 4), so I'll try to find it and get you those files you need.

Great! Let's hope it's not the same as mine... i created a md5 check file with md5summer. Can you use it on your CD/ISO and verify which files are different? If you know a better program for this, please tell me and I'll use it.
