Many of you have nagged about how long it takes for uploads to get on the FTP. I mean, all I have to do is just move the file to the BetaArchive FTP right?

Wrong!

Just to make our members understand how time consuming it is to maintain the quality of our FTP I've prepared a little flowchart for you to take a peek at.

Remember, this one is just a simplified flow chart, there are often more steps to do, and sometimes I also skip a few steps. It all varies depending on the kind of files that are uploaded. The red boxes are the steps that are extra time consuming and troublesome. The dotted boxes are the steps that I rarely apply, also depending on the kind of files I check (for example, OS betas are more or less always installed and tested, whereas console betas or application betas are rarely installed by me, I let these tasks fall on our dedicated members :) ).

And I have to repeat all these steps for every floppy image or ISO file. Remember that.

I will most likely add and modify the flowchart whenever I feel it's necessary, but it gives you an overall view of what I have to do when I check your mislabeled and corrupted uploads ;). Whenever you upload them with proper filenames and folders then I can often skip a lot of steps.

Enjoy! :).

I put this chart together late last night, half asleep and tired after a full day of release processing, so expect some steps to be missing...

Download folder? Can't you just use Windows Explorer to copy folder?

Windows explorer? Are you kidding me? :). LOL... thanks for the laugh :).

Remember, I have to download the uploads since they are not processed on the BetaArchive server, but on my own workstations at home.

As a side note, I wouldn't use Windows Explorer for any file tasks whatsoever, I for one want control over my files and manage them in an efficient way. Which can not be done with an UI designed to manage only a handful of files and folders, and not tens of thousands of them.

So, if at home, then you can use RDP to copy them or whatever, no need for download. :?

I still have to copy them from one computer in France to one in Sweden. In other words, download them.

Ah, I just thought that download and upload accounts are on the same server.

They are. Again: they are not processed on the server.

Thanks for the information and flowchart. It just goes to show that there is far more going on behind the scenes than many people think to process items so that they can be made available from the servers.

whoa, you admin guys do a lot of work...I just thought it was about removing useless stuff from the FTP.
Sad that only a few people care to assist the admins a little and upload their stuff right.
