I would like to know this as I am trying to decide what computer to buy (desktop) for longevity 10 years ago this would have been my top list 1st is DEC/Digital 2nd is Gateway 2000 3rd is Compaq DEC machines for me are the Holy Grail especially the DECpc range sadly all of these companies are defunct or folded into other companies SO please tell me your favorite and I will see which seems to be the best for what i am using it for(mostly video editing and some non intensive game playing). EDIT:Toshiba seems to be winning in the laptop and HP in the desktop.

Had a lot of luck with Toshiba laptops, so that's my pick. Got one that's 11 years old and still runs beautifully (could do with a Win2000 install though).

Myself, they are more reliable than any manufacturer that I have used, but if I had to choose it would probably be HP. I love my HP Tablet. I personally hate Dells because of the very common OLD (Orange Light of Death) that is so common on their desktops. I know the color is actually Amber but we needed a creative acronym to put on out inventory sheets.

Me I like dell's and Compaq's. I never had a problem with a dell or a Compaq but i had an hp pavilion and the PSU caught on fire and that turned me away form HP's

I personally used to love Toshiba until my Toshiba Laptop died of a Motherboard Failure after only 1.5 years. I still like them and loved the laptop as it was a relatively solid performer. My current laptop is a HP and it is great! I also have an old Sharp netbook that is still working even with a slightly broken mobo.(I Think) Also, i have a Sony Vaio laptop that is built like a tank with a dodgy screen
Finally, i have a Compaq Presario 5000 Desktop, which has only had one repair (Video Card) and runs slow (Win Xp on Win 98 Machine = Not a good idea).

If you can, try to build it yourself! You can order exactly the parts you want and customize it in your way. If you don't know how to do that, look for a tutorial online. That's how I got all my desktops.
My favorite manufacturers (I only bought laptops...) are:
1. DELL (Good prices and you know what you are getting) 2. Acer 3. Don't really know... maybe Toshiba.

Ac.
I was going to do that however parts in Australia are hard to come by and alot more expensive than in US or UK.(usually $70 more but I v'e seen some that are more than $200 more) Plus with buying a prebuilt PC by a reputable company, you don't have issues with compatibilty(processor matches motherboard, memory supported by motherboard,)
