... and this only allowed me to see how much data Facebook collects on their users, I have been approached in my high school by administrators about statements on my Facebook, so that alone made me feel as though this was a vice to my privacy. Any before finally deactivating my account it states that you can "download" your Facebook account, this presumably being all the data collected, and also states logging in can restore your account... feels like there's a database of my life on a server.

Your school has no rights to approach you about your facebook. That's ridiculous. You have freedom of speech and they can't override that.

Your school whined at you about your facebook? Tell them they can shove it. That is absolutely ridiculous and has no bearing whatsoever on your academic ability or IRL personality.

There's a difference between deactivating it and completely removing yourself from there. Facebook will "deactivate it" which means absolutely nothing. You'll still be tagged in pictures, posts, and all sorts of stuff, your pictures are still there, everything.
You need to dig through about 10 pages to finally get to the "Yes, I want to DELETE myself from your server" button, and then you've got to NOT log into facebook anywhere, even a cached cookie somewhere, or a smartphone app that you've linked with Facebook will keep it alive, and then you've got to wait again for about a week or so before they actually start processing the data removal.
On top of that, any picture or post that you've tagged someone else in will not be deleted.
Gotta love Facebook.

Hey Pizza man its like any other social site you have to be persistent in order to get out of the site. Also freedom of speech is covered as they rightfully said.

I happen to agree, the school should not even be looking at your Facebook profile at all since that's an invasion of your privacy. It could also be stalking if you never gave permission for them to look at it. What you say about anyone on there is your business HOWEVER, if you begin slating teachers with insults etc, then to be honest if they find out then you deserve everything you get.

This is why my place of work has an IT policy that forbids the discussion of work on our Facebook profiles that might put the company into disrepute. We can talk about the company but positive things only, and we're not allowed to mention anything that goes on that is confidential etc.

I think invasion of social profiles has gone a bit far and should be outlawed, or at least not lawfully be used as a way to get you sacked from your job etc. as we commonly see these days.

I've also heard of some work places forbidding you from even having a FB account. Those places can go to hell since if I want a FB profile I'll damn well have one. Why should they stop me? It's nothing to do with them providing I kept my work life away from it.

Anyway, it's your choice whether to continue with it. I wouldn't let something like this get in the way but I would stop all mentions of school/work on social profiles from now on.

I've seen some people on reddit post because their work required them to give over their username and passwords for their facebook accounts. THAT is going too far.

What the hell? That is too far... That information is none of their concern.

My middle-school also got involved with my facebook, well that was because someone was sending death-threats to me that went to my school. And might I tell you, I work in the administrative office at my school for 4th period, and maybe... twice a month the police come in and I have to deliver a call slip to the attacker/defendants' over a argument they have over facebook. I'm not discluding myself here, because I've done this too a while back, but kids my age do not use facebook correctly.

Private data is public when it comes to Facebook, but I see what you mean.

It's only public when you allow it to be. If i was still in school and i saw them looking at stuff on my FaceBook without my consent they would be taking civil court proceedings for violating my privacy under the privacy act 1974 along with the data protection act 1998.

Only applicable in your own country though. Some people don't have such protections by the government.

Just remember to be aware of who your friends are and what your privacy settings are set to when you post. If you have your profile picture of you holding a beer and a school administrator/boss/etc. sees it (especially if you're underage) you brought it upon yourself.

If you really want to delete your facebook account, I'd recommend the Virtual suicide machine.
It starts by defriending everyone, then it deletes all photo's and post one by one.

Edit: damn, seems they stopped offering facebook suicides

From what I see, you can still apply their service to Facebook by using a special Linux distro.

They sued but nothing happened besides it needed to be a 50/50 agreement. The school agreed to let me back in, but i had to allow them access to my facebook IF something comes up with proper evidence, say, i said in a post that im gonna kill a student, then with that evidence, like a screenshot, they can legally have my password. Thats what the judge came to the conclusion of. Im in college now, i want to work with Microsoft, but not so sure. I dont know if they allow females to work there since i seen a thing about that on another forum once that they dont allow females to work with the higher up coders. Jerks. 8-)
