Hello,

Im doing a little bit of researh and thought to ask people in betaarhvice what makes a OS good OS? What would you like the future OS's (whether its tablet/PC OS) to have?

Thank you for sharing your opinion!

In my opinion, a good OS is the one, with a very intuitive interface, that does the job for you. You expect a feature to work here, and it is there. You click on something, and you see and get exactly what you expected to be there. Basically, made for all people.

To say in more correct words: "exceeds the ability to understand how it works", as said by Jonathan Ive.

For example, I don't like how you should wait 1.5 seconds before a Charms menu opens in Windows 8. Are there such delays in real life? I don't think.
This is just my opinion of course.

There are less or more delays, but if you have to wait for train 5 hours (cause it's delayed) you'll know what delay is.

Maybe "I don't think so." was on your mind :D

Yes, but you don't come up to a person, and he only pays attention to you after 1.5 seconds. Or score a Goal in football, and people scream "GOAL!!!" only after 1.5 seconds.

Again, just my opinion, let's stay ontopic. ;)

Personally, I like an OS that boots and shutsdown fast, is rock solid (i.e. the only way to crash it is with a hammer), and that does what it needs to do (i.e. a POS system doesn't need to play solitaire).
Also, a good OS should be invisible to the user. It should give them easy access to whatever they need in such a way that they don't need to think about what they need to do to accomplish a task.

Well, a good Operating System has so many factors in my opinion that it's hard to write down. A completely perfect OS would be impossible to create.

My Opinion:
Compatibility, stability, usefulness, and a usable UI are key, followed by user-friendliness (I say this because not all OS's are meant for the average user), a good appearance, and extra features that are helpful for the user.

This. There are so many factors to what defines a "good" OS that it's near impossible to nail it down.

It is difficult to say what makes a good OS, a good OS.

For me this is Mac OS X. (Yes there are gonna be haters)

But let see what I do on a regular basis. I video edit, browse the internet, do multiple processes at a time, "Share" files with people >.>, play a few games, FaceTime, and watch anime and movies.

I could do most of these things on Windows but I feel that it gets clunky, and for video editing, it doesn't have software I like which makes it useless for me.

Yes I had to sacrifice a few things switching to mac (mIRC, IMGBurn, NullDC, Dolphin) but they were nothing major to what I do.

Basically, a good OS does what you need it to do and it does it in a matter where there are no major sacrifices and fits your daily lifestyle.

I don't pick favorites.
A good OS is one that doesn't automatically shut down for updates when you're in the middle of beating a very important part of a game.

Windows 7... I could turn off automatic updates if I wanted, but I'm too lazy. I just switched to ubuntu anyway... So it doesn't really matter I guess.

Windows Vista also has mandatory shutdown after installing updates. Sometimes it has a 15-minute countdown before restarting, but sometimes it lets you choose to restart after 10min, 1h or 4h. Sometimes it's annoying I have to say, I don't play games very often, though. Despite that, updates are very important for security, thus I keep installing updates.
