Okay, since now there are three choices of where to go to for upgrading... maybe 4 if we include Ubuntu 12.10 whenever Windows 8 comes out.
But some people including myself have used a server OS as an actual OS, between Vista and 7 I used Windows server 2008 but now its time to decide which would be better for one who won't warm up to the Metro UI, though there is ways to disable it.
Should I keep to the current generation and stay put with Windows 7?
Switch to Windows Server 2011
Wait for Windows 8, or go Server 8 ? or go Linux for a bit?

If your job does not involve PowerPoint I would recommend Linux. It has the cleanest user interface (all of them) and a skilled Linux user is always in demand.

I intend to first use Windows 8 and if I really end up not liking Metro ,then eventually, I will return to Windows 7. I wish Linux was an option but it isn't. But I will always use Linux as my secondary OS. I love Linux, it is great.

Well I'm going to be different I would recommend you check out OpenSuse 12 since it goes where the start menu should have evolved to before MS butchered it. Having a basic learning of Linux is invaluable if you crash windows since we have all been there anyway.

I would upgrade to 8 when it comes out. I wouldn't use Linux as my main (I sort of can't, since I'm a student, and wouldn't want to anyway), but I like using Ubuntu sometimes.

Well, I personally don't like the new interface of Ubuntu (Unity), but Gnome is good (& neat, eg. I use Compiz and Cairo Doc).

I just thought about Chrunchbang Linux. it's fairly nice, I can VM it sometime.. Blizzardo1 had Chrunchbang on his lappy for a short time as a replacement for Windows 7.

The only reason Windows 8 is getting so much attention is that the OS itself is pretty bad. And because MS is trying to use the Same general look on all of there stuff and shoving it on all the OEMs. If I had a choice I would just combine Suse and Windows 7 GUI wise and I would be loving it.

For me, I really think it depends on your setup. What do you do with your PC? Game? Work? etc... Usually what I do is wait a little after the OSes you like come out, and read reviews of it. Might not be 100% trustworthy, but you can kinda see the point.

PowerPoint or any other Windows only application (there's a lot out there!)

I suggest these depending on your most uses:
GAMING: Windows 7 (do not use 8, as about 90% of games are not working even in compatibility mode)
BUSINESS: Windows 7 or 8 really...
PERSONAL (internet, photoshop, etc): Windows 7 or 8.
I would say that by the time Windows 8 comes out the games will work on it, so Windows 8 would really be your preferred option for gaming, business and personal use.

I agree with how light this OS will be for average hardware.

Like i said before though, it would be good as a successor in the Windows Mobile series as a tablet OS, but not windows. This metro craze has to stop. I know when i end up buying a 100% new PC and if it has Windows 8, im downgrading to 7.
