Anyone care to offer some tips or such on layout of files. Currently I just have my files chucked on the Desktop and in random folders. I like them to neat but have no idea how to organize it all.

Is that not just a program?

What I mean is suggestions/ideas on how to place my files in folders.

something like that but cleaner as I hate being disorganized but can't think of a good file structure/layout.

What I do

Movies -> in My Movies

as for my Documents:

ISO's, ROM's and other things that don't fit in other folders I create one in My Documents and put it there.

Oh ok.
I sort them by kernel numbers. Or by codename for the ones older than XP.

I'd do this, it's just I have a external hard drive and I have to try and seperate them as I don't have the same movies on my laptop HDD due to space.

well i sort my files like this

OS Type (Win mac etc) -> OS -> Beta -> release name [if available] (Code name) -> arch (only really on Linux) -> files
. .............................................-> release -> release name -> arch (only really on Linux) -> files
...................................-> APPS
...............................................-> Beta -> release name [if available] (Code name) -> arch (only really on Linux) -> files
...............................................-> release -> release name -> arch (only really on Linux) -> files
...................................-> Drivers
...............................................-> For what? -> OS requirement (if needed) -> files

that's just an example of how my computer stuff is sorted, but everything is done in a smiler way

I did this about 20 years ago, still works wonders.

Everything has two ways of accessing it (eg type, maker), so one should work.

For software, the idea is to try keep files in some sort of release order and os, so i have, eg

Code:
redist          <---- stuff i split off
htext         <---- hypertext (adobe acrobat etc)
  internet      <---- latest browsers, plugins
  mmedia        <---- proggies
  mozilla       <---- thunderbird etc
msft          <---- dotnet, directx, dlls, msi, vpc, fixes by build
msoffice      <---- office junk by year
security      <---- fix utilities like combfix, mbr
treibe        <---- latest download for current machine.
resources       (documents mainly)
  000           <---- unsorted
  bitmap        <---- any stand-alone picture,
  books         <---- pdf etc
  computer      <---- computers etc
  maps          <---- maps by area
  maths         <---- maths related stuff
  pdf           <---- pdf files
web           <---- ungrouped web pages saved
  wm            <---- weights and measures
tdisk           <---- home grown archivals
  k7718         <---- a listed project (win30 + office overwrites)
  bills         <---- saved invoices
  ...
vendor          <---- software
  000           <---- unsorted stuff
  archiver      <---- inc disk archivers
  bitmap        <---- editors, not pictures
boot          <---- boot sectors, managers etc
  dos           <----
editor        <---- editors (text, hex, stream)
  fileman       <---- file managers
  games
htext         <---- hypertext engines and viewers (help systems etc)
  ibm           <---- IBM stuff,
internet      <---- browsers ftp clients, etc
  mmedia        <---- multimedia players
  msft          <---- microsoft stuff
office        <---- word processors, spread sheets
opsys         <---- operating systems and hackers
  os2           <---- os2 miscellany
  program       <---- programmer's stuff
  resource      <---- fonts & font-editors,
  script        <---- command processors
  security      <---- inc virus scanners
  treibe        <---- drivers
  win16
  win32

Under a number of directories i have something like

  000          <---  unsorted stuff.
shell        <---  replacement by function (eg 'shellext', 'edlin')
utilXX       <---  files by name (eg util32\seiber   (from uwe seiber's pages))
dll          <---  dll files, runtimes, etc.

For operating systems, there is a primary list (OS name)

  • DOS \ maker \ 3digit review code or DOS \ dosver \ letter+digits review code
  • Win3x included under DOS
  • Wfw 3x as Win 3.30, 3.31
  • OS2 by version number as 3 digit. or ECS package
  • Win95 by 'osr code' or build number 0950/1212/1998/2222/3000
  • WinNT by version code or build number
  • Win64 (52 60, 61), by build number
  • Vista (60, 61, 62) by build number.
  • Linux largely grouped here.

Non-obvious review codes

  • D601 DR-DOS 6 with business win3 patch
  • M501 MS-DOS 5 initial release (500 is the final)
  • M550 Windows NT dos
  • M630 homegrown
  • O310 OS/2 warp connect 3.0
  • O340 OS/2 warp connect for PPC
  • P5xx DOS From OS/2 x.x
  • P632 DOS from OS/2 econnect
  • P633 home-spun 6.30
  • W302 WinOS/2 3.0 (OS/2 2.0)
  • W312 WinOS/2 3,1 (OS/2 2.1+)
  • W313 'Windoze' builds
  • W333 Allocated for 'Windoze for Warehouses' project
  • 1000 ms-dos 7.0 (allocation)
  • 1999 Wenegier ChinaDOS
  • 2400 home-grown Dos98se
  • 3050 russian dos 8.0

I just try not to keep things I don't use... I'm certainly not perfectly organized but I've at least something.
.
Code:
Video
  TV
  Movies
Music
  Artist
    Album
  Random MP3s
Software
  Games
  Windows ISOs
  Old Crap
Camera Pictures
Random Pictures

For my iOS folder I have it like this
Code:
iOS
    4.2.1
       IPSWs
       Jailbreaks

     4.3-4.3.5
       IPSWs
       Jailbreaks
     5.0
        5.0b1
           IPSWs/iTunes Setups
           Jailbreaks

and so on.

For Linux ISOs

My Downloads
     Linux
        Linux Distro Name
LinuxDistroName.iso (Whatever it downloads itself as)

Edit: It didn't keep the hierarchy layout in the post?
