Hello all,

I have a .VHD image of a Windows server 2008 R2 KMS server for Windows 8 Activation. What VM software runs VHD files? I tried it with vmware and MS Virtural PC and it ran but vmware gave me BSOD and MS gave me a file was missing. Is there something I have to do since this was an image made from a physical machine? Can I sysprep the VHD without booting into that Windows? Please help me out.

VirtualBox should be able to do it-I've run Windows 7 .vhd copied directly from a PC with no problems (didn't even ask me to activate). VirtualPC can't do 64bit, but I don't know why VMWare wouldn't do it.

Just restarts? Maybe Windows detected a big difference in hardware-but I think it should give an error.

Did you set up correct RAM, OS Type etc. and remove all virtual disks?

I don't know really :?

Of course, forgot all about Hyper-V. Tell us if it works. Never used Hyper-V actually.

And I only now realise you didn't make the .vhd yourself... Didn't know you could activate Windows 8. Suppose I better search around for all that then.

It was a private link I got from the main man who made the first Windows 8 KMS server (the no-ip.org one). Once I see if it works I will let yall know in case you are able to get a copy yourself. I hope it does work, at least till a mini kms comes around.

VMware can handle VHDs of Virtual PC 2007.

yes i know but again I tried that and I got the BSOD. Does it make a difference if the VHD was made with Hyper-V?

Is there a Beta of Hyper-V 2012? That might be Ultimate... Or would the Hyper-V integrated into Windows Server 2012 RP work??

Try Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2. Hyper-V does not emulate the processor, it uses the host's processor and sometimes network card.
