Hi all,
I'm adding this here because I wasn't sure where else it'd go: When a site you rely one decides to go "on strike" (like during the recent SOPA protest) chances are you can use their mobile version, I was able to access wikipedia in this manner

Websites usually don't put it on mobile versions but they might leave like a small banner or text somewhere pointing to SOPA or whatever, its optimized for mobile not PC and most mobile browsers are really slow.

Well it depends on the site really, I accessed all of those on my desktop during the black out (admittedly that wasn't really the right way to show support for an Anti-SOPA movement) but still it's on here for those who might need it

Yep! When I go to the library they still use dial-up so I used to use the mobile versions instead becuase everything is smaller and faster! but now they are upgrading
Will add more as I find them. Searching Google for a list of Mobile sites that work or a way to force my browser to open mobile versions.

Dan! Totally forgot about ebay! good find! Also if you're finding mobile enabled site by "hunting by hand" here's a way to save yourself tons of time : (assuming that your browser is Firefox)
1. Download the 'User Agent Switcher' add-on and install
2. From your Tools menu go to User Agent Switcher
3. Choose the default iPhone 3 option, Add one of your own by clicking Edit User Agents OR just by using the import function in the options sub menu of User Agent Switcher.
Or if you're a hardass like me and want to go manual:
1. Type in about:config in the address bar, hit enter
2. Right click in the new window and Click New --> String
3. Type in general.useragent.override, hit enter.
4. In the Value pop-up that appears type in a mobile browser User Agent String (I used Mozilla's Fennec here's the string:
Quote:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux armv61; en-US; rv:1.9.1b2pre) Gecko/20081015 Fennec/1.0a
, hit enter
5. I have way too much time on my hands, I really should get back to work!
Annd you're done! \o/ The problem I've noticed with Firefox over a more obscure browser like K-meleon is that many sites just don't automatically go into 'cell phone' mode. So at times they need to be coaxed manually (i.e you need to type in m.google.com instead of the browser just going to the mobile site automatically.) K-meleon however will immediately go to mobile version (if an approriate UserString has been added) (you can get the links from my browser rant here
P.S. to Test out and see if it worked go to this link: http://www.google.com/?dc=gorganic if you get a Tinier Google page it worked! If however you get the iGoogle page (assuming you're logged into your google account) then it hasn't worked / kicked in yet - another way to check if the new Browser ID string is in place it to type in about: in the address bar you should be able to pick up if it's in "mobile" mode or not by reading through all of the string (keywords like mobile, apple, webkit, etc) P.P.S I got Amazon to go into Mobile mode as well ! It's funny how uncluttered, to the point, and easier it is to browse a site in mobile mode
P.P.P.S The reason why I favored Fennec over the default iPhone browser ID string is because I keep getting popups asking me to install 'our free web app for iphone!' Anyway Let me know how it works out for you!

Favourite OS OS? Windows XP SP3, of course.
Very interesting, indeed. If I recall correctly, some sites already redirect you to a mobile version when they detect that you're mobile. Can be useful to those who are on dial-up (emergency internet connection for the win, I guess).

Some sites also use .mobi (eg. yle.fi-->yle.mobi, although m.yle.fi works aswell). For static sites you can also use Google cache (google anything and then use the Cache button), or you can use Internet Archive. During the SOPA protest I used the Finnish Wikipedia (since only English was affected).
tinyxl, you could use Opera browser instead, which already has user agent switcher built in (opera also has some cool things if you have slow internet-like blocking pictures, and Opera Turbo).
