I discovered a USB driver for Windows 95 a while back, and ever since have been wondering if its possible to create an exact copy of the hard drive of the 95 machine onto a vhd. I know you can do it with disk2vhd on Windows XP+, but what about Windows 95? I am assuming that since Windows 95 hasn't got Volume Snapshot capability, you can't run disk2vhd on it, and I'm guessing you wouldn't be able to use Winimages vhd capabilities either, since it would run into problems with imaging a disk thats in use. So is there another option? Like maybe a live Linux CD that would be able to make a copy of the Windows 95 hard drive onto a vhd on a usb stick. Else I will just stick with normal backups etc. But any help would be apprechiated.

Symantec Ghost or PowerQuest DriveImage could be used to make an image of the drive, but it wouldn't be in VMDK format. VMWare Workstation has a P2V function for making physical hosts into virtual machines but I haven't played with it at all.

Yeah, I wonder if you can convert from some of those images to a virtual disk, eg. by running the program to extract everything onto a virtual disk. Main question would be whether or not Ghost runs on 95/or if it can be booted of disk... *googling*

EDIT: List of disk imaging software: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_disk_cloning_software

Might check out CloneZilla, its free and apparently can be run live of CD and then restored in a virtual machine.

PowerQuest DriveImage and Symantec Ghost are both available in DOS versions.

Clonezilla is also what I would recommend. I believe it images as a raw image which can be converted (virtual box for example using vboxmanage).

Thats what I'm going to try shortly. Hopefully I don't break the old PC (I have backups, but still).
