Intel finally released proper Windows 8 drivers for Minecraft. Now I can run Minecraft on my laptop... or almost. Every time I run the game, the screen is nothing but a solid color. The game is actually running as I can click buttons and even get into a world/server if I click in the right places but it's just a solid color.

I'm thinking this is a graphics driver issue, as when I ran Windows 7 on my laptop (Intel HD Graphics 3000), Minecraft ran fine and when my desktop (NVidia GeForce 9500GT) was running Windows 8, Minecraft also ran fine once I installed the proper graphics drivers.

Ideas?

Most likely a graphics driver issue, or something to do with Intel Graphics. Because even though i hate windows 8 i decided to install it again, and some of my older games wont work, and Tomb Raider Legend is giving me the same issue. I cant see nothing on screen but can hear the game in the background. Even if i try to run in compatibility mode, its the same outcome for whatever reason.

In my opinion, we need to make a LIST OF PROGRAMS/GAMES WORKING WITH WINDOWS 8 THREAD like this one: http://www.eightforums.com/gaming/2556- ... eview.html

Cause i have loads of games i tested.

Uh, Windows 8 is still in beta, making such compatibility list will be pointless until the RTM is released. You people do know the reason why it's still in development right?

I repeat many times that betas (even pre-rtm) are not suitable for games.

I think the issue has nothing to do with Minecraft and more to do with Java 7 on Windows 8 and Intel HD Graphics. Here's another Java-based game on the same computer and it's got the same issue:

Is it possible to roll back to an earlier version of Java? (( I don't have an installation of Windows 8 to test right now, so I am wondering. )) Does Java 6 install in Windows 8?

It did back in Windows Developer Preview. Thing is, Java 6 is 32-bit only and every time I tried playing Minecraft on a 64-bit system with 32-bit Java, Minecraft would always crash after a few minutes of playing with an "Out of Memory!" error.

Hmm, you can always try launching minecraft this way from the windows "Run..." box:
Code:
java -Xms512m -Xmx1024m -cp "%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\*" -Djava.library.path="%APPDATA%\.minecraft\bin\natives" net.minecraft.client.Minecraft '"'your_username_here'"'

If that doesn't work, you can adjust the allocated memory by playing with the -Xmx and/or -Xms flags.

Of course, running minecraft this way makes it difficult to log into a server unless the server is set to offline mode...

I'd say this is an issue with the Intel drivers. I'm on Windows 8 CP, on a computer with an ATI Radeon HD card. Java 7, Minecraft, and the My Little Investigations demo work fine.

This looks to be related to the Lightweight Java Game Libraries, likely not compatible with Windows 8.
We've blocked the LWJGL DLL files to prevent Minecraft from being playable on our domain machines - causing the exact issue you describe.

I'm sure other games out there will use LWJGL. You may be able to extract the DLLs from another game using newer versions of these files:

C:\Users\mattnotley2004\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\natives\lwjgl.dll
C:\Users\mattnotley2004\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\natives\lwjgl64.dll

Hope this helps.

As further investigation into this I've actually found the same issue with Minetest. Strangely though version 0.3.1 works fine, yet version 0.4 gives me the same error as with Minecraft. Minetest is a c++ version of Minecraft which makes me think it has nothing to do with Java and is in fact something to do with OpenGL with the latest Intel graphics update for Windows 8.

Edit: It must be an OpenGL issue as Minetest 0.3.1 Uses Direct3D 9.0 (which works fine), whereas 0.4 uses OpenGL 3.1.0 (which gives the same solid colour bug as Minecraft).

What is the version number for your Intel Graphics drivers?
Are you running 15.28.0.2729 or 15.28.0.64.2729?

The 64-bit driver for the 64-bit Windows 8 CP: 15.28.0.64.2729

Could it be a x64 bug, does anyone get this error with x86(32-bit) Windows/Intel drivers?

I don't think so, I've got Java 7 on Windows 8 RP and it runs smoothly, without any blank screens or so. It must be graphics card issue, then. Intel HD Graphics Cards are craps IMO.

Is there a way you can get Minecraft to not use Intel HD Graphics but your other graphics card(s) (such as Nvidia or ATI cards) only?

Don't have a second graphics card in my laptop. Doesn't matter now anyway, the latest Intel beta drivers solve this issue.

Your kidding me right? You gotta have a graphics device other than the integrated Intel one. But I'm not ruling out the possibility.

Nope, all I've got are the Intel HD Graphics in my laptop, and I'm completely okay with it. And, the latest Intel beta drivers for Windows 8 RC fix the odd issue was having with Minecraft.

Intel HD Graphics: it works, but it could be much better...

My issue is the drivers dont support an accelerated OpenGL mode.
