Hello all,

I have an iBook G4, late 2004, I believe, that is having weird problems.

Firstly, I tried installing Leopard from a single layer disc I made, it got so far, then said it had an error. So I restarted it. I decided to just go back to Tiger. Well know, when I try and install it, it boots, gets to the desktop, says something about there being a problem, and tells me to the look at the log. Then it just shuts down. Also, to add to all that, I decided to try my 10.3 discs, and they boot, but the apple logo shifts several pixels to the right. Any help would really be appreciated, I am really stumped here.

Thanks.

The Leopard came on a DL disk, no SL disks that I know of. You might have a ram issue, but without log output we can't really help you.

I tried pulling the 1G ram that came with the iBook when I got it. It's not an Apple part. I'll see what I can do about a log. Is there a boot CD I can download that'll let me format my hard disk? I can't even access Disk Utility. I ran the Tiger disc with the stock RAM amount. same thing happened.

The way I've always erased the hard drive is boot to the install disk and used the disk utility.

Now that I think of it, if you have another mac you can try "target" booting the iBook and connecting to another mac to erase the hard drive if you want.

It's probably a really elementary suggestion, but have you tried the Apple Hardware Test disc? :$

That's the problem. It'll boot the Tiger disc, tell me there was a problem, and then immediately shut down. I can't access Disk Utility or get the log for that matter. I didn't get any discs when I bought it, but I just bought a set.

Try this.
Apple Hardware test is a separate disc… It is not the Tiger install disc.

OK. I'll give it a shot once my disc set gets here.

Not sure why you need to wait for a disk, unless you're waiting for a blank disk. You can download it here --> http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Ha ... 4398-A.dmg .

Thanks for the link. I wasn't aware you could download that. I bought a set of restore discs that come with the hardware check disc.

I just tried something. I downloaded Ubuntu PPC, installed it using the whole hard disk option. Rebooted into Ubuntu to confirm it installed OK, popped my Tiger CD back in and rebooted. The error it throws up is "Because of a problem, installing Mac OS X could not be completed" and then it just shuts down. That's the way it's been no matter what I do. Next, I'm going to run the hardware check.

Also, I have my old powerbook G3, I was wondering if it would be possible to install Mac OS X on that machine, then put that HD into my iBook.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

The PB G3 possibly, but if I remember, the latest can only run upto 10.2, it depends on the model.

I ended putting the old HD back in, now it works like a charm. I think I screwed up the HD I had in it.

Thanks for the input guys.

I updates my iBook G4 to Leopard (before the power supply shorted out). It works really well. The only problem I had was with the install disk. To resolve the situation, I created a new HDD partition with the Leopard install files along side my Tiger partition. I then booted into install mode, I forget the keyboard shortcut at the moment. Then I installed from the Leopard partition.
The only downside was I had reduced HDD space because of the reduced partition.
