Okay, my monitor died about 1 month ago and I still haven't found a replacement, so I decided to start my computer without it. But why do I keep getting the feeling that it won't go past BIOS due to lack of monitor? Is this even possible?

Maybe graphics card is damaged? I started my computer without the monitor, and it ran without any problems (BIOS -> System startup sound.) Or try just pressing F1 or F2 on keyboard.

It shouldn't halt at the BIOS screen... Any beep codes? Is the keyboard plugged in?

Naw, if there isn't a monitor connected it'll start up anyways. I know this because I have a KVM switch that when you swap computers the previous computer thinks the monitor got disconnected but I can start up a computer on another port and switch to it after it's started so I don't have to sit and wait for it to load.

You can detect the problem by BIOS POST acoustic signals.

Just a regular single short beep

So that means your computer is getting past the initial POST.

But it definetly halts somewhere, as when I press the power button it shutdowns emmidiately, and way too fast for Windows, which means it doesn't get into Windows...

are you sure the OS hasn't had a panic or failed to load?

how old is the computer sir? one of the processes in the motherboard POST sequence is to initialize any
graphics cards on the comp of course.. im sure vga bios recognizes during its post routine that no cable is attached and will halt/refuse to boot. Bummer about your comp man..

It doesn't, otherwise you couldn't run plain old desktop computers as a headless server.

-No OS boot menu
-No Windows password
-No recovery from incorrect shutdown/whatever...

So it should get to Windows, but it doesn't because the computer doesn't show up in the network after several minutes of running even though it's connected.

It can only be the BIOS as I suspected... so I'll just have to buy a new monitor...
