So... I have a family PC. It's pretty standard. It's the one where Vista doesn't recognise the fact I have a BluRay drive and that the OS is glitchy as heck.

And here's what happened:
Presumably the computer had an app that was locked up, so my mom decided to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete. The usual. My dad, at possibly(?) the same time she pressed the key combo, switched the PC off via the plug.

He switches it back on only to hear a long beep when it is powered on.

It is a Packard Bell imax X3516/X3615 (unsure).

I assume it doesn't output any video?

BIOS beep codes are incredibly proprietary...do you know what brand BIOS you have?

Check the power cable, it could be loose, and check your RAM (take it out, and put it back in). You could also try resetting your CMOS, there's usually a RESET CMOS switch on the board. If there isn't, remove the battery from the motherboard...

I'm pretty sure it means there's a hardware issue... But I'm no expert :(

the app that was locked up may of happen at the same time as a hardware fail.

Check for loose ram / video or other cards.

Try re-seating all components, resetting the BIOS via the CR2032 battery or the reset jumper. I could describe and pinpoint the issue though if you told us the brand of BIOS (i.e. American Megatrends/AMI, Phoenix, Award, etc). If it's anything like my old Packard Bell it'll be American Megatrends. However that's from the Pentium 3 era. I imagine Packard Bell now use Phoenix. It will be interesting to see however.

EDIT: Seems to be Award BIOS v6.00PG which is unfortunate to some extent. Motherboard manufacturers customise Award BIOS's (since they only sell the software, allowing OEMs and MB manufacturers to do their stuff). I can try and provide a somewhat accurate answer though. One question though, 1 long beep, you mean the 2 second beep, right? 1 long beep is usually a memory error.

a hardware failure may be what caused the app to lock up. I have had system that do 1 long beep when the video retrace system fails. no video is outputted, nothing from the keyboard. try using different RAM or a different video card. sometimes i just swap memory sticks and all is fine, but your PC might only have 1 stick of RAM
