I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but if you haven't already, add CD and mouse drivers! It really annoys me when I can't play DOS games due to a lack of mouse drivers.

CD and mouse drivers will be added in a future release.

You are right, it is a completely custom OS, but it will have support for DOS/Windows applications and games.

Currently I'm working on implementing the dos stub and the dos pe header, which are the first steps in launching dos programs (this will be available in Milestone 3).

Windows 9X, as these are the closest in their pe headers to dos.

OK, here is the new release, it is now available via http://heinanos.codeplex.com.

New features:

How is this project currently going? I haven't got testing builds for a little while.

Well, I improved the calculator with sqrt, pow and cos functions. I'm currently working on finishing the rest of the functions, and then I'll send you Build 44 (Current build is 43).

Really nice project!
I don't know much about how operating systems work. I know it's a kernel and other things run on top of that, but that's pretty much where it stops. This looks like a great opportunity to learn a lot more about it, since it's still in a pretty early stage.

One question though, does the 41 build already run dos exes? And how do I do that, I've just made a little hello world app in qbasic but I can't run it.

I don't think HeinanOS is running DOS programs yet.

QBasic? You'll have to find QuickBASIC if you want to make your hello world program run under DOS; QBasic doesn't have a compiler in it.

Well, that's because HeinanOS can't run DOS programs, yet.
However, in Milestone 3 you'll be able to do this (Milestone 3 is planned to debut atleast at the end of March 2011, maybe even middle of April 2011)

@ linuxlove: it's quickbasic what I mean.

And can I help with this in any way? I only know a little bit of vb.net (not relevant here) and basic, but would love to help this thing grow.

If you know C, Daniel1981 might let you help develop his OS.

That's the problem, I don't know C, only vb.net and basic. And I don't know that level of programming which is needed for an os.

Neither.

C For Dummies - start with this if you are a beginner
C For Dummies All-in-One Desk Reference - then move to this if you really want to get serious with C

I was thinking, once it is able to run DOS programs, I might make a little software pack for it.
Offtopic Comment
If you know any DOS software that could be used in my pack, you know where the PM button is.

Yeah, the problem is that technically, dos programs are still copyrighted, so, you must check that packing this software is legal

I will surely look if the programs I add are copyrighted. I will try to make this package once HeinanOS has support for DOS programs.

*Clicks refresh on his GMail inbox to wait for a new build after trying out a lot of new GMail features for which I am in the Beta*

Whats actually the standard program format for this os?
In the future it'll be able to run dos programs (with so with layout), windows uses PE (portable executable format) as it's standard exe layout.
What's the standard for HeinanOS? Or isn't there any yet?
