I have a Netgear WNR1000 V2 and I was wondering if it was possible to use it as a WiFi repeater.

Works if you use DD-WRT.

many limitations in routers are on the software side or Flash/RAM size related.

While ddwrt has this feature, I did some research and your router may not be supported. Apparently the v1 and v3 are, but the v2 has taken the back seat in development. Take a look at this page to see if you can actually get ddwrt on it, http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-detection
