Yahoo offers sync and search features in new Axis Web browser
May 23 2012, 7:53pm PDT

Axis is available for iOS and through browser add-ons on the desktop.

Yahoo is aiming to get its foot into the browser market with a new product called Axis that launched this evening. The purpose of Axis is to add an extra layer to the user’s Web browsing experience, with interactive search capabilities and cross-device synchronization. On the desktop, Axis is implemented as an add-on that extends existing browsers with its own functionality.

Yahoo also released an iOS implementation of Axis—a standalone Web browser application built with the platform-supplied WebKit HTML renderer. It works much like other popular third-party browsers for iOS, such as Dolphin and Mercury. Axis isn't available for Android at this time.

The core feature of Axis is interactive search. It has a text box in which the user can input a search query or an address. As the user types, Axis will show autocompletion options in a vertical list. Alongside the list, it displays a horizontal container with search results.

Many of the results are accompanied by a thumbnail of the page. You can click any of the suggested queries in the autocompletion list to see the associated results in the horizontal pane. When you click a search result, it will load in the current tab. You can also scroll horizontally to see additional results.

Yahoo fumbles security in Axis browser launch
Troubled Internet pioneer forgets to publish terms of service for its new browser and also leaves the door open to an apparent vulnerability.

Yahoo made its first foray into the browser business this evening, but did it give us an unfinished product?

As my colleague Rafe Needleman explains, Axis is an aggressive product designed to eliminate the middleman in the usual search process and take visitors from query process straight to the desired page.

However, this doesn't appear to be the only step Yahoo skipped; the struggling Internet pioneer also left out an explanation of its terms of service. A search for those basic rules turns up a placeholder page that informs users:"Terms will go here."

Granted, most users don't care about the terms of service and even fewer have actually ever read them. But more troubling is a little nugget that Yahoo apparently left in its new browser.

Nik Cubrilovic, a self-described blogger and hacker, found that the Yahoo Axis Chrome extension leaks its private certificate file, making it possible to counterfeit extensions:

First, you should remove the second post and add its content to your first post so that you're not double-posting. Second, can we get actual source links, please?

Double post is double post. I didn't notice that the "More@"s were links, for which I apologize. I have trouble telling the difference between blue and black. But yes, both should go in one post. You can always put a little space between them.

I called this on Twitter when Derf posted a link to an article about it. I knew this could only fail epically, and it did.

I can see the future. ;)
