NEW BLOG POST IN BUILDING WINDOWS 8
Quote:
One of the intrinsic capabilities of Windows 8 is the ability to use multiple accounts on any PC. This makes it much easier for parents to use tools that can help protect their children from content on the Internet as they see fit. It is also a great way for each family member to maintain their own unique online identity while still sharing a single PC. Microsoft has been a leader in creating tools to help maintain a safe computing environment for all users as well as for parents in particular. With Windows 8 we have substantially improved the family safety features and services available. Phil Sohn, the senior program manager lead for Family Safety, describes how Family Safety features will work in Windows 8.
--Steven

Kids today grow up online. They use computers to do their homework, play games, communicate with friends, and access the wealth of information on the web. Computers give children access to many positive experiences; however, parents face challenges in monitoring what their children see online, the people they meet, and the information they share.

At Microsoft, we want to help parents create a healthy computing environment for their kids. We encourage parents to talk to their children about online safety and to set guidelines for their computer use. Microsoft and many safety advocates also recommend moving the family computer to a common room in the house so parents can glance over their kids’ shoulders to gain a better understanding of their online activities. Parenting techniques like this are important, but they may be difficult to employ if your household has multiple PCs or if your kids use laptops and tablets. And glancing over a teenager’s shoulder can be awkward for both parents and kids.

A safer Internet is just a click away

With Windows 8, you can monitor what your kids are doing, no matter where they use their PC. All you have to do is create a Windows user account for each child, check the box to turn on Family Safety, and then review weekly reports that describe your children’s PC use. No additional downloads, installation wizards, or configuration steps are required. Just check the box!

Etc.

Any comments?

Yea, but 4 those who do, it raises awreness to parents that there's a good family solution out there that just got refined further in Windows 8, Including filtering, time limits, and activity reporting.

wait, only four parents use parental controls? I highly doubt it.
Unless you mean the word 'for' which is different to the number four.
(sigh, how i hate textspeak being used on the internet...)

Parental Controls have always been a joke. They are so stupid. Get your kid their own computer. Don't let them use yours if you are worried about them breaking it. If you are worried about what they are doing online then you have done a bad job as a parent teaching them what you believe, but if they go against you then up to the age of 10 perhaps parental controls are nessasarry.

Seriously. You gotta be kidding me. By the time a child becomes a teenager they are responsable for their own actions. A parent has to trust that the teenager will do what the parents (or parent) have taught him or her. If the teenager makes mistakes it is not the parents fault if they have taught said teenager correctly.

As I said before, Parental Controls are a joke. They are easy to get around or turn off. Once I helped someone get around parental controls. I asked what parental controls were being used and I finally just set up a flash drive running Ubuntu for the person to use. Simple way to get around the parental controls.

You got a new OS because of parental controls? :OD

I obviously meant 'for'

And the blog could do with stats on how many people currently use Family Safety or some other filter software.
It could also reword the branding so that not only parents, but employers etc. could use it for controlling their employee's computer usage.

I think Parent Controls are stupid (says the kid who torrents.)

If your child is looking at porn, its not your fault, and you can't really stop it without looking over their shoulder. *cough* http://www.hidemyass.com/

Should we start putting Parent Controls on cell phones? Video Game Systems? TV? Im not meaning like "Can't go on the internet on their phone" I mean stuff that logs everything they do. Its just taking away more freedoms.

I could see it being used for Employers. They can block social networking sites but there are still ways on getting around it. There always will be.

Parental controls are simply annoying things that prevent you from doing what you want, IMO. What had it really done to help families? Why not teach them to be responsible instead?

This system never works perfectly, Windows needs a system like the Google SafeSearch to block inappropriate websites.

Windows 8 Family Safety automatically locks the SafeSearch Filters in most search engines like Google to strict.

ahh... my opinion...

Like gamelover101 said, I'd prefer that parents use trust and responsibility, rather than filter, deny and monitoring, for their children's internet activity. While this is new and nice ability to integrate parental controls in Windows 8, I find it intrusive.

Note: My opinion, like anyone else's, is an opinion. Some may or may not agree with me. Also note that like anything else posted anywhere on the internet, I post stuff knowing that it will be read. I also happen to be a 14-year-old high school student in Australia. (note: we have no middle school)
