Just saw this. For all of you celebrating over SOPA's downfall, I'm afraid the party's over. Lamar Smith has authored an even BROADER bill now that would force ISPs to save every single bit of information about their users and make it available to the government. This includes names, phone numbers, credit card information, and even specific temporarily-assigned IP addresses. It's an incredible violation of privacy. The act is claiming to protect children from internet pornographers, but that's a load of [CENSORED]. Admittedly, this is probably only of REAL interest to BetaArchive's US members, but still. Oh, and it's already been approved by the House committee it was presented to.

With the excuse of fighting piracy, they will collect ALL of our data without our consent.
This [censored] unitedstatesian government really needs URGENTLY some brains.
And, surely they will push this [censored] bill to other countries, like Spain or Italy.
It's very clear what I say to these [censored] bills :
NO

This is one reason I support Newt. He wants a Open internet. Both Republicans and Democrats are at fault for all these bad bills on censoring the Internet. I will never surrender my rights and I will fight in all ways possible to defend them.

Would you quit bringing up Newt Gingrich at every turn? The guy's a sleazeball, and electing him won't make anything better, because the president doesn't have the right to interfere in the legislative process. ELECTING SOMEBODY FOR PRESIDENT WILL NOT MAGICALLY FIX THIS COUNTRY.

/end rant.

That's like Rajoy's case. He won the spanish elections, and now everyone's bashing him.

Anyway, the government should pay some attention to the people, not only to the cinema/music/whatever industry.

Didn't mean to upset you. I agree that just electing somebody for President is not just going to fix this country. You're right the President can't interfere but he can say that what ever they are doing is a bad idea and veto it, if it gets to him. About Newt, when compared to a New England Massachusetts Left Leaning Moderate, a Wackjob who thinks Iran should who have a Nuke, and a Boring Guy who thinks everything will be solved if we fix the social problems in this country, Newt looks really good.

That's YOUR characterization of the choices, not mine. It's between Con Man Newt and Plastic Smile Romney at this point. I'd rather go with the one I DON'T know for sure is corrupt. And the President's veto can be overruled by Congress. So yeah. Anyway, this topic isn't for political debate. It's about yet another attempt to violate our rights.

I agree we should stop before somebody else gets in and the topic gets locked.

On a more serious note, the Americans won't stop. Some of their media industry sued Ireland for not giving what they want.

All Microsoft operating systems!
As I've said earlier, there is only one (strictly unnamed) part of the United States where such legislation is supported on a day to day basis; it won't go through when the government resides in Washington, D.C. (District of Columbia).

Even the president himself is obviously against this type of legislation, so I'm going to be stunned if it's at all passed in any sense of the word.

Also, for those of you who are arguing who is in favor of such legislation (Democrats vs. Republicans), enough already. It has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with either party, libertarian democracy, socio-democracy, whatever... This is a completely different issue - just that there are people on both sides of the democratic controversy of whom are either in support of it or strictly against it.

And finally, since the people supporting it are in such a strong minority, it almost certainly won't make it, period. Especially considering that the United States is a largely voting-based country (as with its similar countries; Canada, those in Western Europe, and Australia and New Zealand), I highly doubt that the rest would give in to such legislation when people are obviously going to be taking to the streets and "protesting" against anything like this "bill", as they already did with SOPA.

Lamar Smith himself is among the few of whom are in favor of it!

First, I have yet to see anyone on this thread argue in FAVOR of this legislation. Second, I only found out about this bill by chance. It hasn't been on the news in my area, it hasn't been in the papers. People don't KNOW about it like they knew about SOPA, though word is starting to spread. Third, Lamar Smith WROTE the bill. Of COURSE he's in favor of it! Finally, the US may be a "voting-based" country, but did you read the article? This bill is going to be a lot harder to shoot down, since it's (falsely) labeled as a child-abuse prevention bill. It's a political hot potato for BOTH sides. If it gets shot down, politicians look like they're not doing enough to protect children (despite the bill doing nothing to protect children). If they pass it, the Internet attacks them for the invasions of privacy. Frankly, even if it DOES fail (which I'm devoutly hoping it does), it'll be a MUCH closer thing than SOPA was. This one actually stands a chance of passing.

Well, this probably won't affect me (I'm from Bolivia), but, this is out of control, The USA Goverment doesn't know how to control us. This year will be a constant fight between the goverment, big music and movies corporations between the Internet user

Stop the Censorship!!

Heh... we all have our fair share of worries across both sides of the pond. I'm more worried about EU signing ACTA. As if it wasn't enough, this thing'll screw even pharmaceutical drugs !

Also, what's with this guy spamming "anti-piracy" legislation ? I find it hard to believe that he's the only yokel MPAA, RIAA & friends have found within the government.

It's going to continue as long as the people continue to elect these scumbags. We should push forward with term limits and take the profiteering out of Congress. When we take back the power we stop the abuse.
