Yeah, linuxlove. We'll have to use workarounds such as Classic Start Menu or custom theming. I want everything to work out of the box, especially when it did in a previous operating system release.

Also people here are assuming actual Aero is gone, but only the glass effect is.

This new look provides what everyone were complaining about, having consistency in both UI's. Now that you got it, you are complaining!

Well at least for me W8 is still a nice update, except for the 1024x768 requirement :).

I'm confused, you use OS X?

This is a theme change, nothing more. We knew it was coming, have for ages. File this in with the "Mozilla can't use Win32 APIs in Metro" shocker in "news that everyone knew anyway". DWM is still powering it, and hasn't been neutered in any way - indeed, in Windows 8, it's more tightly embedded than ever. Just try to disable it.

I use Windows and OS X. In "previous operating system release" I meant Windows 7, where there are "features". Here they are not only turned off by default, but also you can't get them back without using any third-party tools.

Anyway, on the another hand this gives some coherence to the whole envinroment, which kinda lacks on Windows 8 CP.
Opening the desktop via the Metro Start screen makes me feel almost like switching operating system.
Very strange feeling, I've always found Windows GUI experience really polished and uncluttered, only in Windows 8 CP this is not the case.
Aero just does not fit well with Metro, in my opinion.

And yeah, this is such a pity, the CP Aero iteration is probably my favourite of all times, it's very nice looking.
But again, I don't think Windows 8 can ship with either Metro and Aero.
Afterall, the image in the open post doesn't look that bad, I like it.

If you don't like it, just wait 'till the style builders get to work.

In reality, pretty much everyone on this board except for me, evangelikevin, Tandyman100 and hounsell all hate Windows 8 so everyone is looking for any reason to hate Windows 8.

It seems that hating Windows 8 has become the "cool' thing to do and people are just doing it because certain major news outlets (who don't know Metro from their left nut) are trashing it.

Sure is bandwagon in here.

Honestly, I kinda like the style, Metro works well on a desktop (only form-factor I have been opposed to Metro is on laptops with just a touchpad or pointer stick. Sucks on those), and having an App store should help with the "youth appeal" of "OMGEEZ I WAHNT MAH APPZ0RZ!!!!"

You know, it would be so cool if they brought back Watercolor for Windows 8. It's flat, but with style to it. I think it would work well as a default theme for Windows 8.

I think this is a wrong move. It's a good way to keep the desktop looking consistent with the Metro interface, true, but it reflects a worrying change in Microsoft's tactics. For an OS that's meant to be all about the user, they certainly seem to be taking away a lot of the choices that we should be offered. Every Windows OS since XP (or 95 if you count Progman) has had alternate window looks for different circumstances...

That said, it's all irrelevant. Give it a few weeks and uxtheme will be cracked so far open that it won't be an issue.

Seconded! Watercolor, with Office XP, looked stunning, even on the theme port to XP. There was a theme somewhat like it for Windows 7 called Hmm7 that looks quite snappy when it's applied too, if it's your sort of thing.

You can count me out, I'm even using Windows 8 right now to write this message, and I don't have any problem with Windows 8.

As far as I'm concerned, it's just a mere theme change and nothing more. As for the theme change, I really don't see how it affects the operating system itself in terms of actual functionality. If Windows 95 lacked the new window metrics and icon styles, for example, wouldn't it still be Windows 95?

There's an old saying - "Don't judge a book by its cover". In other words, don't judge anything by mere appearance. If MS-DOS had green text instead of grey text by default on a VGA monitor, wouldn't it still be the same MS-DOS?

I believe I have the right to have an opinion and share it, and ATM my opinion about Windows 8 is at the "not-so-good" stage...

Actually, I like all this change in Windows 8. A lot. It's nice to see something new from Microsoft. Aero was nice in Vista, but in Windows 7.......hmm...not so much. It was just plain glass and nothing else. Even if I get bored of that new style, there will certainly be custom themes on the net.

The same could easily be applied to the Aero theme so what's your point?

The point is that he likes that Microsoft is trying something new. As he explicitly said.

Perhaps I put that the wrong way. Honestly providing Aero will still be offered as an optional feature then I'll be fine with it.

I think they're taking out too much for most users (which are NOT the tablet base). No dvds, no aero, and no start button?

That's alien.

So.... I think this OS shoudnt be called windows.... 30 years went to the trash... And it all started with Steven...

I truly hate the guy his ideas killed the LH idea from windows and turned into .... Tiles?

Oh well good thing is we will have ie10 for win7 and win7 won't expire... And with some reg ports and driver ports win7 can be as fast as win8.. I'm so glad I stepped away from Microsoft when I saw the plans for windows 7... And now windows 8 the biggest downgrade of windows ever...

Oh well... I think it would be a good time for a LH leak <hint> builds 407x or 406x </hint>
Since those are super stable just to show MS some payback.....

I wonder what face dude wud say about win8... RiP frnd....

Isn't Microsoft also removing WMP? I'm pretty sure I heard you'll have to pay for it.

No, that's Windows Media Center. WMP has been depreciated from what I hear, and is being replaced by the "Music" and "Video" apps.
