Hello, does anyone remember before duke nukem came out it was originally going to be for pc/win98 . well i do remember hearing that some people had a copy of the initial demo. im curious if someone can confirm and maybe post some screens. Also, once upon a time ago i had a halo demo that came with a magazine i bought around 98/99 and it was a rts. i think it was issue 1 of excite magazine or something. anyone have any more info rearding this?

I dont believe any demos of either of these two exist. Videos possibly, but no actual playable items released to the public. There was an EXE file for a trailer of DNF though.

Almost impossible.
I remember Halo developed for Mac at first and Duke Nukem forever had a dev cycle like TF2-grin

There was the initial previews that appeared in the November 1997 issue of PC Gamer (Which I still have :D), but according to some of the news that came out around the time that 3D Realms closed down, they basically said all the images and video were mock-ups, and not that of actual gameplay.

As for Halo, you have to keep in mind that it was essentially a sequel to the Marathon series of games, which were produced for and on Macs at the time. There is video out there of the old 3rd-person RPG-style game, but as far as I know, no working builds :(

For both of these games, I've searched countless hours for any solid binaries, but alas, I have yet to find anything.

Not true. Former lead developer of DNF Charlie Wiederhold posted this breakdown of what was fake/real/functioning in the 2001 trailer: http://forums.duke4.net/topic/4164-dnf-2001-breakdown.

Yeah... 2001 and 2003 leaks would be perfect. Most of that 2001 trailer was true/realish. only like, donkey, worm and a couple of things were fake.

I can confirm that the Halo demo you are thinking of does not exist, unfortunately. It must have been of another game that you're confusing for Halo.

I believe Hogsy did try and get a hold of Duke Nukem related stuff from several 3DRealms' developers but was not successful unfortunately :(

No I tried to get my hands on an early build of Prey. A disc holding a functional build along with Preditor has been found by one of the developers and I'll be recieving that at some point in the future.

Yeah it was quite funny.
Singleplayer was playable with some bugs and texture errors.
I don't know how many missions just played the first one before it came out on PC.

Any need of upload?

Sounds very interesting! Any chance you might be sharing that early Prey build?

Man, it's a shame that 2001 version of DNF hasn't leaked. It's perfect. Even with the aging graphics, it looks like a way better game than the actual retail DNF does. The DNF that was actually released to the public was incredibly cheesy and felt rushed.

Fully agreed, and I bet we will eventually see more leaks, it may just be a while. I think part of the issue is who owns what and the fact that the programmers and designers don't own the game. It may also be harder to share something that has actively verifiable information as to who sourced the leak. But stuff will show up eventually, though who knows how long eventually may be.

I second this! I've always been a big fan of Prey - never knew there was any betas out there. Mind uploading it to the FTP if it's in decent shape?

Duke Nukem Forever really took forever. I think they changed engines like 3 times? Or was it 5 times?

@arsenalwow

Three times.
Quake -> Quake 2 -> Unreal Engine

They did not switch to the Unreal Engine 2 like a lot of people suggest.
You could say four if you also consider that they were also planning on using Prey's engine early on but there's nothing to suggest they actually tried it so I wouldn't really count it.

As for Halo a beta was released for PC (1.5 is what I've seen)
Beta 1.5 is shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jX7WklVNIss

Halo Combat Evolved does have a demo (the Halo Trial) but it recently had its multiplayer support dropped by Game Spy. The normal Combat Evolved still has functioning multiplayer.
