Members need to provide more info with their posts, such as if the demo itself is based on pre-release code, build numbers (and RTM build numbers to compare to etc). Anyone can go on a download site and search "demo".

Exactly! we need Betas we are the Betaarchive
And you're also forgetting mrpijey added a nice abandonware section to BetaArchive too.

According to the AoE Beta website, the official Trial version of the first Age of Empires game is based on a pre-release build of the engine (info), but I don't think it's also true for Age of Empires II (mentioned in the OP).
BTW, a very common version of the Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness demo is marked WARCRAFT 2 DEMO BETA v1.02elc, while a later version is called WARCRAFT 2 DEMO v1.20elc. The differences between the two builds, however, are minimal: the font used in the "Ordering Info" screens has been slightly changed, and the setup programme puts the default multiplayer game username as "Anonymous" in the later version (as opposed to no name at all in the "beta" version). Both versions can be downloaded here: http://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Warcraft_II:_Tides_of_Darkness.html
Zombie Wars Internet Demo This is a beta demo version of Zombie Wars. It doesn’t have all the features of the full game but will give you a good idea of how much fun it is to play. NOTE: The demo level in the full game is a completely brand new level - so if you do decide to download the full game you’ll get a bonus level plus a cool 3D rendered intro!

Well, it's a beta demo (see quote in my post above), based on a pre-release build of the game, it has historical value and it's pretty hard to find, so why exactly wouldn't it qualify?

So game demos appear before the release of the full game.

PS, most demos = Gold
Well, that one I linked to is explicitly said to be a beta. I'm not arguing that all demos should suddenly be considered beta material O_o (it's just that the OP happens to be about demos, not betas). There are obviously both cases, with demo versions that are kept up to date with the full version, and those that aren't, and as such show some pre-release features (Star Wars: Dark Forces demo anyone? Same with the Age of Empires trial version I mentioned above).
Anyhoo, I guess this thread's title is too misleading, so it's better to have it drift away from the first page, right?
