Hi. I would like to install Apple Mac OS X 10.8 Developer Preview 4 into VMWare Workstation 8. I have the official .dmg file. I would like to convert it into .iso file. Any suggestions.

A .dmg isn't really a disk image, it is more of a "virtual disk", like an .img. If you want to convert it to an .iso or .cdr, a better method is to figure out a way to create a .iso image with the contents of the .dmg. Assuming there are no hidden files or such, there shouldn't be a problem doing so.

You're not supposed to tell him, he's supposed to google it.

Why would someone ask on the forums for help if they already failed to google it? If someone didn't have any luck googling, it's just as good as telling someone who is struggling on a test to re-read the directions. Maybe they even came here from google!
Also, for .dmg files, you could try either renaming the extension (Which might not work), or, extracting it, and using Folder2Iso to create an .iso file from those images. That might also fail, but it's worth trying.

Actually, .dmg is usually a compressed ISO. In most scenarios, renaming from .dmg to .iso is enough.

MAC OS X:
Download a program called Burn: http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/Pages/English/home.html Right click your DMG file, go to Open With and click Burn. When burn opens you have 4 Options at the bottom: Mount, Scan..., Save..., and Burn. Click Save. It'll bring up a box. Tell Burn to put the ISO where you want it, then, rename it from "PoopFile.dmg" to "PoopFile.iso" and click "Save." It will turn the DMG file into an ISO file.
Actually, in OSX all you need to do is use Disk Utility:
Start Disk Utility
hit Convert
select your DMG
click the Convert button
in the Image Format selection choose "DVD/CD master"
hit Save
It will create a CDR file which is a fully unpacked and raw ISO file, all using the tool that comes with OS X. You can even do it straight from the installation disc if needed. For the purpose of not having to deal with foreign and cross-platform unsupported formats I always do this with DMG files before putting Mac stuff on the FTP. Your method may work just as well, but this is a way without the need to download a third party tool.

Agreed, no need for external programs when it's all built in.

No. I would like to do the process in Windows 8 Release Preview as host. I can also have Linux Ubuntu 12.10 Alpha 2 converting the .dmg. However, I don't like VirtualBox, I like VMWare Workstation 8, but then you must have an .iso. Don't know how to use dmg2iso.

Let him get his helpful posts up, especially aas that was a good post, IMO. Althought there are better ways to do it, as told by others already.

Hmm. First of all, I don't think VMWare can run MacOS as host on Windows, but I've never tried. Converting it could be done in many programs, have you tried dmg2iso?

MagicISO can do it, I'm not sure if it will install though. OS X has a different way of booting than to "legacy" (or so they say) OSes, depends if VMWare can handle it.
