[quote="spunker88" I don't see how Java is an issue. Java ran on phones a lot less powerful that any Android phone made today. Flip phones back to the early 2000s had Java games on them. How is Android fragmented? Is it because its deployed on a variety of hardware running different versions of the OS. How is that any different than Windows? Is the internet fragmented because multiple browsers are used?[/quote]
Those less powerful phones didn't run the modern Java apps. Sure my 386 could run MS-DOS but that doesn't mean that it can run Windows 7... and both are built for the same platform (but with different performance requirements). But no, Java itself isn't the issue but rather how it's implemented with the hardware.
This thread isn't about the drawbacks etc of Android (I suggest we move that to a new thread if needed), but Android DOES have a fragmentation issue. Various OS versions, various hardware platforms and no unified way of running all apps on all of them. I have not yet found a Windows 7 desktop application that can't be run on Vista laptop, or a XP game that can't be run on Windows 7. Microsoft invested a lot of time into backwards compatibility and all editions of say, Windows 7, can run the same software. Not all variants of say, Android 2.1, can run all the Android 2.1 applications due to various hardware configurations, screen sizes etc. And Google has done very little to maintain a working backwards compatibility layer, not to mention they let hardware vendors go in and fiddle with the code to add their own customizations. There lies the fragmentation. There isn't just one Android platform, there are a multitude depending on if you run 2.1, 3.0 or 4.0, and if you run a tablet or a phone, and depending on if you run it on a HTC, Panasonic or Samsung. I have plenty of software I could never run on my Galaxy Tab that worked on the Galaxy S and vice versa, and both ran the same OS version but had different junk embedded by Samsung that broke compatibility.
Apple's 'i' products are just overpriced versions of things you can get for quite cheap. I have noticed them getting cheaper, but you still don't need to pay £500 for a phone.

I agree totally... But in the US depending on what carrier you have, you can get an iPhone cheaply.

They have about a 50% margin on iPads which is pretty good for them considering they make even more money via media sales. The Kindle Fire on the other hand is sold basically at cost with profit being derived all from media sales, books, apps, movies, etc.
Its not just the iPhone that has a high full price. Full price and unlocked smartphones in general have high sticker prices on them, probably to make the subsidized versions look like a better deal than they really are.

That's up to each person to decide what's "overpriced" or not. If you take a high end Android phone you'll pay the same kind of money as well so I wouldn't call iProducts expensive considering what you get. You maybe don't need a £500 phone but that doesn't mean the same goes for everyone else. As for their margins, it's irrelevant. There are other markets with far greater margins and people don't seem to complain much about it (gas, printer ink, food). And considering the popularity of Apple products I would say that Apple is doing it just right, doing something most other companies in the same business would only dream about. And considering Apple were at the brink of bankrupcy and didn't have any experience in the music or phone business I would say that Apple knows something neither you or I know when it comes to do good business.

I bought my iPad 1 of a friend that had won a iPad 1 in a contest, then a year later won an iPad 2. So I bought the iPad 1 from him for like $70 dollars plus it was still in the box.(Opened but still in box.)

That's a good price for an iPad 1, I'm hoping I can get a iPad 2 for pretty cheap now that the 3 is out.

infact on the huffingtonpost at the bottom of your linked page they send you to another FAQ link which goes on to say;
Quote:
Just how hot is too hot for a tablet or laptop? At this point, we don't believe the temperatures we recorded in our tests of the new iPad represent a safety concern. As we said in our initial post about the iPad's heat issues, the tablet felt "very warm but not especially uncomfortable if held for a brief period."

The ipad overheating issue (I really wanna say its completely terrible but I'm a good person) has been blown out of proportion the average temperature it reaches is about 93 degrees thats a mediocre amount. If you can put up with a warm laptop which most college students do then you can deal with it. (Again I hate to defend apple but come on guys).
Its a good device.
